Football: Everton's Funes Mori apologises after Origi injury

Everton defender Ramiro Funes Mori has apologised for the tackle which injured Liverpool striker Divock Origi in the Merseyside derby.

Argentine Funes Mori was sent off for the challenge in Everton's 4-0 defeat.

"I very much regret what happened," Funes Mori said. "It was never my intention to harm a rival and I fervently hope it's nothing serious." Origi was stretchered off and will have a further assessment on the ankle injury amid fear of ligament damage

Family pay tribute to a man who died after being struck by a car in Liverpool

The family of a man who died when he was struck by a car in Liverpool have paid tribute to him.

Mark Whyte, 52, from Aigburth, died after being hit by a car in Aigburth Road on Tuesday.  

In a statement, his family said: "Mark has a large family including two brothers, two sisters, a daughter, three sons and five grandchildren.

"He had a loving partner of three years, Karen. He enjoyed playing drums and guitar in various bands and had lots of friends."

West Kirby Marine Lake to remain closed until weekend

The Marine Lake at West Kirby will remain closed until at least the weekend as Wirral council's environmental health team awaits the findings of water samples taken yesterday.

The council suspended all activities on the lake and closed the popular tourist attraction yesterday.

It is asking people not to enter or use the lake until further notice and has apologised for the inconvenience it's causing.

Two PCs who were patrolling nearby came to the rescue after receiving reports from concerned residents that a duck was distressed in Victoria Park - but when they got there, mum duck couldn't be found.

After seeing events unfold on social media a family nearby got in touch after a duck and two ducklings turned up at their pond - and the good news is the ducklings have been reunited with mum!  

Rugby League: Super League leaders Warrington Wolves face Oldham Roughyeds

Man who died after being hit by car in Aigburth is named

The man who died after being hit by a car on Aigburth Road in Liverpool on Tuesday has been named as 52-year-old Mark Whyte of Aigburth.

He died after being hit by a white Volkswagen Golf which then crashed into a lamppost and overturned on Aigburth Road.

The 26-year-old driver, arrested on suspicion of death by dangerous driving, has been bailed, police said. But he was recalled to prison for breaching the terms of his release.

Woman. 41, arrested on suspicion of arson after St Helens house fire

A 41-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of arson after a fire at a house in St Helens early this morning. 

Eight people had to be rescued from the blaze on Fleet Lane at about 04:30 and they are being treated in hospital for breathing in smoke. 

The house has been extensively damaged.

Twelve arrested in Sefton serious and organised crime raids

Twelve suspected drug dealers have been arrested in raids this morning across Bootle, Crosby, Southport, Litherland, Anfield and Chester in an operation to target serious and organised crime in Sefton. 

Officers have found two potential guns in the searches of 16 homes and they will now be tested to find out if they are viable weapons. 

Last week 11 people were taken in for questioning and charged with drugs offences.

Eric Appleby, an engineering student, joined the British Army when war broke out in 1914 and was sent to pre-partition Ireland for training.

He met his sweetheart, Phyllis Kelly, at a dance in her home town of Athlone, County Meath, and quickly fell in love.

Their brief courtship was interrupted when Eric was sent to the Front in March 1915 to fight with the Royal Field Artillery.

Chester shopkeepers criticise advertising board plans

Shopkeepers have criticised plans to control the number of advertising "A-boards" in Chester city centre.

The council wants to bring in a licensing scheme for advertising boards on pavements, or they could be banned altogether. 

It's claimed they can cause obstructions and make the area look cluttered.

Queen's 90th birthday to be marked across region

Events are being held across Merseyside and Cheshire to mark the Queen's 90th birthday. 

This evening, beacons will be lit outside Liverpool and Wallasey Town Halls.
