Hillsborough campaigners Trevor and Jenni Hicks return to Leppings Lane at Sheffield Wednesday FC for the first time since their teenage daughters died following a crush in the 1989 disaster.

Men jailed for fake police kidnapping

Three men have been jailed for posing as police in a car with blue flashing lights and kidnapping a businessman.

Car valet Nathan Parry, 37, of Ellesmere Port, was described as the "brains" behind the offence and jailed for 12 years at Caernarfon Crown Court. Andrew Ballantyne, 36, and David Staff, 34, both from Chester, were "willing lieutenants" and each locked up for seven years.

The 33-year-old victim was handcuffed in a stolen Audi in a four-hour ordeal.

Motorists urged to avoid Switch Island after crash

Motorists are being advised to avoid Switch Island following a crash involving a motorbike and a 4x4 vehicle. The motorcyclist has been taken to hospital after he suffered serious multiple injuries in Ormskirk Road at about 15:35. Police have closed a number of roads leading on to Switch Island and lengthy delays are possible. The closures are expected to remain in place for several hours.

Ormskirk Road and Dunnings Bridge Road in Aintree are closed and traffic is very slow in both directions between the Copy Lane junction and Switch Island because of a crash involving a car and a motorbike.

A diversion is in place via Northern Perimeter Road and it's causing congestion on the M57 to junction 6 for Kirkby.

Woman dies after being hit by car in Billinge

A woman has died after being hit by a car in Billinge. 

She was struck at the junction of Birchley Road and Martindale Road at about 12:30. 

Carr Mill Road has been closed from Billinge to its junction with East Lancashire Road while investigation work is carried out. Merseyside Police are appealing for witnesses.

Seaforth's Montgomery House tower block finally comes down

People living near a 15-storey tower block in Merseyside that has taken nine days to be demolished are to be allowed to return to their homes.

The two vacant high-rise buildings in Seaforth were due to be demolished simultaneously on 24 April.

But both remained standing after the controlled explosion before Churchill House collapsed soon afterwards.

A second attempt to bring down Montgomery House failed before it was decided to take it down in stages.

A woman arrested over the fatal shooting of a man in Liverpool has been released on bail.

Mark Hillman, 26, was shot twice in the back and found on a pavement in Lloyd Close, Everton, on Wednesday.

He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead.

A 39-year-old woman from Everton questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder has been released pending further enquiries, Merseyside Police said.

Man arrested after van driver 'shot at'

A man has been arrested following reports a van was shot at in Walton.

The driver claims he was forced to swerve when a man wearing a balaclava fired two shots at the vehicle in Buchanan Road.

A 23-year-old man from Walton has been arrested on suspicion of affray and possession of a firearm.

St Helens suspect charged with attempted murder after man found unconscious

A 26-year-old St Helens man has been charged with attempted murder following an alleged assault in Runcorn.

Drug death teenager is named

A 17-year-old girl who died after taking ecstasy has been named.

Faye Allen died yesterday after it is thought she suffered an adverse reaction to a form of the drug known as Mastercard, police said. She had been on a night out at the Victoria Warehouse in Trafford, Greater Manchester.

A man, 19, and woman, 20, from the St Helens area, have been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug.

South Yorkshire Police has appointed its second interim chief in a week after the fall-out from the Hillsborough inquests.

South Yorkshire Police appoints new temporary Chief Constable

South Yorkshire Police has appointed a new temporary Chief Constable, while a permanent successor to David Crompton, who was suspended following the Hillsborough inquests, is sought.

Dave Jones, who is currently the Chief Constable of North Yorkshire Police, will take up the role. 

It follows a decision by Dawn Copley to stand down as acting Chief Constable last week after it emerged her conduct at a previous force was being investigated.

Families of jailed seafarers to meet Foreign and Commonwealth officials

The families of six seafarers detained in India - including Ray Tindall from Chester and Paul Towers from Bootle - are to meet Foreign and Commonwealth officials later to look at what action the British Government is taking.

Two people have been arrested over the death of a teenager who took ecstasy.

The 17-year-old girl died in hospital after it is believed she had taken the type of drug known as Mastercard at Victoria Warehouse in Trafford, Greater Manchester yesterday.

A 19-year-old man and a 20-year-old woman from the St Helens area have been arrested on suspicion of possession with intent to supply a class A drug.

A candidate for Merseyside's police and crime commissioner was sacked by the former Serious and Organised Crime Agency (Soca), it has emerged.

Tory councillor David Burgess-Joyce was "dismissed for misconduct", Soca's successor organisation the National Crime Agency (NCA) said in a statement.

Labour MP Angela Eagle said she was "incredibly concerned" and urged him to consider resigning as a councillor.

Mr Burgess-Joyce has rejected allegations of any wrongdoing.

A man has been stabbed in the back by a group of men armed with a machete in Wirral.

Police believe the 25-year-old from Birkenhead was attacked when his car came into contact with another vehicle in Upton yesterday evening. 

Two 40-year-old men, from Bebington and Upton, have been arrested on suspicion of assault and affray. The victim is being treated in hospital.
