Weather: Dry with clear spells tonight, warm and dry on Friday

This evening will be dry and warm in most parts with some good sunny spells before dusk.

This will lead to a dry night with some clear periods, most likely towards Runcorn.

Friday will be another dry day, and although cloudier than Thursday, some bright spells are still expected. It will feel warm in the gentle easterly breeze.

Villarreal fans have been paying tribute to the Hillsborough victims ahead of tonight's game at Anfield.

Families of Hillsborough victims are calling for a scrutiny group to oversee two police inquiries into the disaster.

Lawyers representing 22 families said the group would report directly to the home secretary and "provide scrutiny whilst maintaining independence".  

Football: Flare ban warning ahead of tonight's Europa League semi-final

Liverpool fans are being reminded flares and smoke bombs are against the law and shouldn't be used inside Anfield tonight.

Supporters can expect to have their bags searched at the turnstiles before kick-off and sniffer dogs will also be in operation around the stadium.

Anyone caught with the pyrotechnics will be banned and prosecuted.

Unconscious man rescued from River Mersey

An unconscious man was rescued from the River Mersey by firefighters this morning close to Jericho Lane on Otterspool Promenade.

An off-duty Merseyside firefighter and a member of the public had entered the river to keep him afloat before he was taken by boat to the Marine Rescue Unit at Pier Head.

He was then taken to Royal Liverpool University Hospital for further checks.

Families of 22 of the Hillsborough victims are to meet the Home Secretary Theresa May to call for a scrutiny group to be set up to oversee the criminal and disciplinary investigations into the disaster.

Operation Resolve and the Independent Police Complaints Commission are examining whether any offences were committed on the day and in the weeks and months which followed. 

Travel: Extra trains running for Chester Races

Investigation after body found on Southport railway line

An investigation is under way after a body was found on the railway line in Southport this morning. 

Emergency services were called to the scene, close to Southport station, just after 06:00. 

The person was pronounced dead at the scene.

Slow traffic on the M6 in Cheshire after accident

Traffic cameras on the M6 show how bad the congestion is following an earlier accident in Cheshire between Junction 18 at Middlewich and 19 northbound at Knutsford.

An independent review into the would be welcomed, South Yorkshire Police has said.

A man from Anfield arrested by detectives investigating the murder of a man in Everton has been released on bail.

Mark Hillman, 26, was shot in the back, before being found on Lloyd Close a week ago. 

A 35-year-old has now been questioned on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder and assisting an offender.

Polling stations in Warrington open marking start of council's new electoral system

Polling stations have opened in Warrington to mark the start of the borough council's new electoral system.

For the first time, all of the local authority's seats will be contested. Previously only a third of seats would be up for grabs at each election.

A man has been shot in the legs in Prescot. It happened at 20:40 last night on Dennett Road.

The 33-year-old is now recovering in hospital while detectives work to find out the motive for the attack.
