PC Dave Phillips to be awarded Freedom of Wirral

A Merseyside Police Officer, described as a hero after being killed in the line of duty, will receive Wirral's highest honour this evening.

PC Dave Phillips died when he was hit by a stolen pick-up truck in Wallasey last year.

His family will attend a special ceremony where he will be posthumously awarded the Freedom of the Borough.      

Plain packaging introduction 'could cut smokers'

The Liverpool-based Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation says there is evidence that plain packaging on cigarettes would reduce the number of smokers.

Man, 67, arrested over Runcorn bomb hoax

A 67-year-old man has been arrested over a hoax bomb threat in Runcorn. 

It was made from a phone box in High Street early on Thursday morning and claimed a device was inside a shopping centre. 

The man is now being questioned.

Drugs gang jailed over £6m heroin haul inside furniture

A gang that smuggled heroin with a street value of £6m inside a shipment of furniture has been jailed.

Hafiz Akhtar, 34, Mohammed Yaqub, 34, and Abdul Wahid, 37, were sentenced to 15 years, 11-and-a-half years and seven years respectively at Manchester Minshull Street Crown Court.

The consignment was found inside a shipping container sent from Pakistan to Royal Seaforth Docks in Liverpool in April 2012.

Apology over 'The Sun' T-shirt

The singer in the Queen tribute band has apologised on BBC Radio Merseyside after the band's guitarist wore a T-shirt with The Sun newspaper's logo on during a show in Liverpool.  

Many audience members walked out of the Empire Theatre when the bass guitarist performed in the top. 

Singer Gary Mullen insists it was just a costume and the band had no idea how the newspaper was viewed in Merseyside.

Officials at Liverpool John Lennon Airport insist there is no security threat - after the departure lounge had to be evacuated.

There was a technical problem with a scanning machine so all passengers were removed and their luggage had to be re-checked. 

At no stage was there a threat to passenger safety, an airport spokesperson confirmed.

Liverpool men convicted of £130,000 ATM raids

Thieves have been found guilty of using explosives to blow up cash machines in a series of raids which netted more than £130,000 across Aberdeenshire.

Joseph McHale, 38, Kevin Schruyers, 42, and Robin Vaughan, 43, all from Liverpool, were part of a gang who targeted ATMs.

Convicted killer who stabbed inmate sentenced to life

A convicted killer who stabbed a fellow prisoner to death with a prison-issue kitchen knife, has been sentenced to life imprisonment with a minimum term of 33 years.

Alex Cusworth (pictured), 37, was stabbed by 51-year-old William Tolcher in Dartmoor Prison last November. A jury at Plymouth Crown Court found Tolcher guilty yesterday.

Tolcher, from Liverpool, was already 15 years into a life sentence for murdering a woman in Newquay in 1996. The court heard he had 30 convictions for 72 offences.

The judge said: "The parole board may never consider you fit for release ... I am sure you are an extremely dangerous man because you have murdered two persons."

A woman's died after her car plunged into a dock in Liverpool. The accident happened at Waterloo Quay this morning.

Officers are working to identify the woman and contact her next of kin. Witnesses are asked to contact the the roads policing team on 0151 777 5747.

The post was shared 145,000 times and was seen by John McMahon who had hoisted Joe on to his shoulders to get him away from the packed terraces.

An elderly woman has died after the car she was driving went into the water at Waterloo Quay. 

Police and the fire service were called to the scene at 9:40 after reports of a car seen in the water.

The woman was removed from the car and efforts were made to resuscitate her but sadly she later died in hospital.
