Shootings leave communities feeling 'totally unsafe', says MP

A Liverpool MP has said many people in the city have been left feeling "totally unsafe" after a number of recent shootings.

Steve Rotheram was speaking after an incident close to his office in Walton this morning, in which shots were fired at a car. No one was injured.

The Walton MP called for increased police patrols and said there were "a lot of people who are worried tonight". 

He added "there's a school just yards away from where this happened and you can imagine parents being concerned about any further incidents."

Cheshire in top three for drug driving arrests

Cheshire Police made 561 arrests for drug driving offences last year - it is the third highest number in the country

The Metropolitan Police carried out the most arrests at 1,636 followed by Greater Manchester Police with 573.

The figures also found there were 239 arrests in Merseyside. 

Football: Rovers defender signs new deal

Travel: M6 delays after accident

The M6 northbound is closed due to an accident between a bus and a van. 

There are also long delays southbound between junction 20, (M56 Lymm Interchange) and junction 17 (A534 Sandbach) because of people slowing to look at the accident.

Drug driving tests reveal results 'within eight minutes'

Officers can find out whether a motorist is drug driving within eight minutes of a saliva swab being taken, Cheshire Police said.

The force made 561 arrests between March 2015 and April 2016, the third highest after the Metropolitan Police and Greater Manchester Police.

The country's top police chief has called for a fast track system within forces to make sure the best people become leaders.

Firearms incident closes Liverpool road

Reports of a man carrying a firearm have prompted a police investigation in Liverpool.

Merseyside Police were called to an incident in Rice Lane, Walton, at 11.05, and a section of the road was closed at its junction with Hornby Road.

Officers said no one is thought to have been injured at this stage.

Belvedere Academy crash: Driver's 'profound regret'

An 80-year-old woman who caused a crash outside a Liverpool school, leaving eight girls injured, has expressed her "profound regret".

Norma Stokes was handed a two year suspended sentenced and a lifetime driving ban following the accident outside Belvedere Academy in February.

Ch Supt Mark Wiggins said: "The actions of Mrs Stokes left eight school children injured, five of them seriously with fractured bones and head injuries. The effects of those injuries will last a lifetime.

"Mrs Stokes too has been greatly affected. She has always expressed profound regret, and will carry that guilt with her for the rest of her life.

"This was a horrendous thing to happen to everyone and our thoughts remain with the young people who were injured."

Belvedere Academy crash: Woman given suspended sentence and lifetime driving ban

An 80-year-old woman who admitted dangerous driving after a crash near a Liverpool school that left eight girls injured has been given a two year suspended sentence and was disqualified from driving for life.

Five girls aged between 11 and 16, were seriously hurt in the crash in Belvidere Road on 12 February, with one girl sustaining brain injuries.

Norma Stokes, of Booker Avenue, Allerton, admitted five counts of causing serious injury by dangerous driving at Liverpool Crown Court yesterday.

An 80-year-old woman who admitted dangerous driving after a crash near a Liverpool school that left eight girls injured has been given a two year suspended sentence.

Travel: Fuel spillage closes Wallasey Tunnel

A civic reception is to be held for the new boxing world champion Tony Bellew and other Merseyside boxers who fought at Goodison Park on Sunday.

Carla Lane: 'Champion' of animal welfare

Carla Lane was most famous for creating hit shows including The Liver Birds, Bread and Butterflies.

But she was also hailed as a "champion of animal welfare" in later life and became known for looking after hundreds of rescue animals - running an animal sanctuary from her mansion in Horsted Keynes, Sussex, until 2009.

Car flips on side after Haydock crash

A car flipped on its side after a collision involving two vehicles on Church Road in Haydock.

Police are currently working to clear the scene and there are road closures on Church Road and Piele Road.

Man found dead at house in Wirral

The body of a man in his 40s was found at a house in Wirral yesterday.

A visitor called police when they got no reply in Moseley Avenue, Wallasey.

His death is being treated as unexplained. A post-mortem examination will take place today to establish the cause of his death.

A section of Lime Street in Liverpool remains closed because the derelict Futurist Cinema still isn't safe, the city council says.
