Liverpool's St Johns Market to close for £5m refurbishment

St Johns Market in Liverpool city centre is to close temporarily this Friday as part of a £5m improvement programme.

A new seating area, cafés, public toilets, lifts and wi-fi will be created over two floors with a modernised entrance on Elliott Street.

Work should be completed in time for Christmas trading.

Lime Street closure extended due to work on former Futurist Cinema

Work to make the derelict former Futurist Cinema on Lime Street safe is still ongoing and road closures remain in place, Liverpool City Council has said.

It had been hoped Lime Street would reopen tomorrow but the council said although "good progress has been made", it has not yet been completed.

Two arrested in Mark Hillman murder investigation

Two men have been arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to commit murder by police investigating the shooting of Mark Hillman in Everton in April.

The two 18-year-old men, both from Anfield, are in custody where they will be questioned by detectives from the force's serious organised crime unit.

A man whose son died in the Hillsborough disaster claims he was "pinned against a wall" by a South Yorkshire Police officer 27 years ago.

Barry Devonside, whose 18-year-old son Christopher died, alleges he was assaulted at a Police Authority meeting in Barnsley in the presence of then Chief Constable, Peter Wright, and other officers. 

South Yorkshire Police said they were unable to comment on the allegations directly, but the interim Chief Constable Dave Jones has previously said he wants to "engage with communities both inside and outside of South Yorkshire who have been let down by the police service."

Charity seeks nominations for top ten endangered buildings list

People in Merseyside are being asked to nominate buildings for the Victorian Society's top ten endangered Victorian and Edwardian buildings.

Two finches were rescued by firefighters from a blaze in Tranmere, Birkenhead, earlier, which started in a kitchen.

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has promised to order a new Mersey ferry as he launched his manifesto to take charge of the Liverpool City Region.

Mr Anderson made the pledge at Birkenhead's Cammell Laird shipyard, which he hopes will build the vessel.

Man, 49, arrested over New Ferry rape

Police investigating a rape, in the early hours of Sunday in New Ferry, Wirral have arrested a 49-year-old man from Birkenhead on suspicion of rape.

He is being questioned by police.

Fire crews still at scene of 'major' Garston fire

Fire crews in Liverpool are continuing to tackle a large fire at a former tannery in Garston which has been burning since last night.

Ten fire engines attended the scene on Locke Street after an initial call at about 19:15 on Tuesday.

Modern day slavery guide launched for small businesses

A new guide is being launched to help small firms in Merseyside and Cheshire understand how new modern day slavery legislation will affect their business. 

From April 2016, large companies had to report on their supply chains - and it means there will be a knock-on effect on smaller firms. 

The guide was produced by the Federation of Small Businesses, the University of Liverpool and the International Slavery Museum.

Date set for Liverpool City Region Mayor vote

The people of Liverpool City Region will be able to vote for their first-ever Mayor on 4 May 2017, it has been announced.

Communities minister Greg Clark made the announcement about the date of the vote for the Mayor which will give the city region direct control over £30m a year investment.

Fire crews in Liverpool are tackling a large fire at a former tannery in Garston which has been burning for 16 hours.

Ten fire engines attended the scene on Locke Street after an initial call at about 19:15 on Tuesday- Blackburne Street remains closed.

Around 200 tonnes of baled recycling material comprising paper, plastics and fabric are involved.

The Environment Agency was informed due to a smoke plume blowing across the area and across the River Mersey but there is no risk to public health.
