A man is in hospital with a fractured eye socket and nose after a gang attacked him in St. Helens in the early hours of Saturday. 

The victim - who is in his 20s - was found by Asda on Kirkland Street at 04:00. 

Police have released images of a number of people in the area at the time.

St Helens has biggest early years gender gap in country, report finds

Boys are falling behind girls in early years education, with the gap widest in St Helens, figures show.

Boys are nearly twice as likely as girls to have fallen behind by the time they start school, a report says.  

Save the Children says a quarter of boys in England - 90,000 - started reception class struggling to speak a full sentence or follow instructions.

The gap between boys' and girls' EYFS scores was widest in St Helens, where 31% of boys did not reach the expected level compared with 14% of girls.

Cyclist Chris Boardman's mother dies after bike collision

Tributes are being paid to the mother of Wirral Olympic cyclist, Chris Boardman, who has died after a cycling accident in north Wales.

Mrs Boardman, who competed in cycling races in her youth, was taken to hospital with serious injuries following the collision in Connah's Quay, near Deeside, on Saturday.

Chris Boardman said she was "the most positive, outgoing person you could ever hope to meet".
