The coastguard was called into action when a group of Pokemon Go fans tried to row across New Brighton marine lake in a bid to "catch" one of the game's virtual reality characters.

The pursuit ended in a collision with a police car and another vehicle on Penny Lane. Two men have been arrested.

Competitors from over 40 countries have descended on Southport for the final of the Mr World competition.

The current Mr England, Chris Bramell, from Liverpool, is taking part in the event, which has featured various heats.

The winner will be crowned tonight at Southport Theatre and Convention Centre.

Coastguard alerted as Pokemon Go players row boat across marine lake

A 20-strong group of people playing Pokemon Go rowed across New Brighton marine lake, alerting the coastguard.

Firefighters were also called after the group were believed to have taken the boat without permission in the early hours.

The youths had disappeared when crews arrived, and had left the rowing boat drifting in the middle of the marina, the coastguard said.

People are being urged not to take risks when playing the monster-hunting mobile game.

Two men have been arrested after a police car chase through Liverpool has left five people injured.

The pursuit started in Toxteth after police received reports of an Audi "driving dangerously and at high speeds".

The vehicle later crashed on Penny Lane. Five people including a police officer have been treated for minor injuries.   

Police believe the Audi had been stolen in Widnes earlier this month. Two men, aged 18 and 19, are being questioned.
