Weather: Light rain for most

Any light showers will ease early this evening, but then outbreaks of rain will spread from the south west.

Funds raised for urgent work to save Waterloo church

Funds have been raised to save Old Christ Church in Waterloo which means that urgent works needed to keep it open to the public will begin on Monday, the Churches Conservation Trust said.

The sandstone tower of the Grade II listed church has been severely eroded due to the salty coastal winds off the Liverpool Bay and parts of the churchyard had been roped off due to the risk of falling masonry.

A total of £331,000 was raised - with £50,000 from local group the Friends of Old Christ Church along with other grants and donations.

Wallasey MP Angela Eagle suspends open surgeries in her constituency

Angela Eagle MP has suspended open surgeries in her Wallasey constituency following discussions with police and will now meet constituents by appointment only.

A spokesman for Ms Eagle said she took the decision after discussions with Merseyside Police about safety following the death of MP Jo Cox and on the back of the suspension of the Wallasey Constituency Labour Party over allegations of bullying and organised demonstrations in the area.

Tomorrow's open surgery is cancelled but Ms Eagle will continue to attend constituency events, he said.

Det Ch Insp Sarah Kenwright said: “We have given Ms Eagle advice about her surgeries, at her request, but the decision to cancel surgeries is not a police matter and would lie entirely with them.”

Football: Liverpool agree £25m Wijnaldum deal

Liverpool have agreed a £25m deal to sign Netherlands international Georginio Wijnaldum from Newcastle.

The 25-year-old midfielder, who had four years remaining on his contract at St James' Park, will have a medical with the Premier League side on Friday.

Wijnaldum joined Newcastle for £14.5m from Dutch side PSV in 2015, playing in all 38 of the club's Premier League games last season and scoring 11 goals.

He will be the Reds' sixth signing of the summer so far.

Travel: Wallasey Tunnel closed in both directions

The approach to the Kingsway Tunnel in Wallasey is currently closed in both directions, while officers try to talk a man down from a bridge. 

Officers received reports of concern for man's safety, after he was spotted on the Poulton Road bridge Traffic is currently being diverted, and police are asking people to avoid the area if at all possible.

New Brighton lifeboat station to close for weeks over training row

New Brighton lifeboat station will close for several weeks after the RNLI stood down several volunteers in a dispute over training.

It said the group of lifeboat and hovercraft volunteers had 'refused to commit' to a training programme that would bring them up to the standard of all its volunteers. 

It means the New Brighton station will not be able to operate safely in the short term, so its services have been suspended.

It hopes to reopen in August.

Body found in search for missing Wirral man

Police have told the family of a missing man from Port Sunlight that a body has been found in North Wales. 

Russell Beck, 51, disappeared from his Wirral home on 19 July. 

The body, which hasn't formally been identified, was found last night near an aqueduct by Wrexham.

Police investigate suspected arson at Europa Pools in Birkenhead

Police are investigating a suspected arson attack on the roof of Europa Pools in Birkenhead.

Firefighters were called to the leisure centre on Conway Street just before 16:40 yesterday.

About 150 people, including children,  were at the centre when this fire started, police say. 

The building was evacuated and one child was taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation.

The leisure centre remains closed today and a joint police and fire investigation is underway.

Liverpool-born Alan Bleasdale's rarely-seen first television work, Early To Bed, has been released by the BBC in a collection celebrating his screenwriting.

A man is arrested after a drone was flown over Huddersfield Town's home game with Liverpool.

Play was stopped in the 61st minute when the gadget was spotted hovering above the field. 

The pilot was arrested and questioned on suspicion of breaching Civil Aviation Authority regulations.

People encouraged to stay out late in Chester city centre in new scheme

A new scheme has been launched in Chester to encourage people to stay in the city centre after 17:00, to join up the day and night time economies.

It is called "Head Out Not Home" and is encouraging businesses to put on events and for shops to stay open later to create a party atmosphere, with live music and street entertainment. 

The idea was thought up by the business group Chester Bid, and will run every Thursday during the summer.

Plans for £1.6m lottery fund bid as Southport conservation areas considered 'at risk'

Councillors in Sefton will meet today to discuss plans to bid for £1.6m from the Heritage Lottery Fund to help restore some of Southport's historic buildings.

It comes after the Lord Street and Promenade conservation areas were named on the national Heritage at Risk register in 2014. 

If successful, the money would be used to repair and restore vacant historic buildings to bring them back into use. 

£2.6m plans to restore Bowring Park historic buildings expected to get go ahead

Councillors in Knowsley are expected to give the go ahead for a £2.6m scheme to restore historic buildings in Bowring Park.
