Wirral teen who got nine A*s at A-level says grades were a 'bonus'

A teenager from Wirral who is celebrating achieving nine A* grades at A-level said the qualifications are a "bonus" as he enjoyed all his subjects so much.

Daniel Lawson, 18, who attended Calday Grange Grammar School in West Kirkby said he was "pleased and relieved" and his family are "very proud".  

I was incredibly nervous... I thought I was borderline to get my offer of two A*s and an A... I would have been happy just to meet my offer

After being accepted to study Medicine at Magdalene College at the University of Cambridge, he said "everything else was just icing on the cake.

Sir Paul McCartney fans hungry for a new album shouldn't have too long to wait... the singer's just confirmed he's back in the studio working on a new album, after signing a new worldwide record deal with Capitol Records.

Macca seems very happy about it too, as he and the label have history.

This is genuinely exciting for me. Not only was Capitol my first US record label, but the first record I ever bought was Gene Vincent's Be-Bop-A-Lula on the Capitol label.

Expect to hear more from Macca's back catalogue soon too, as they've got plans in the works to be announced next year.

A teenager from Wirral is celebrating breaking his school's record by achieving nine A* grades at A-level.

A-levels are "important to get you to certain places" but the point is "to do what you enjoy", he said.

Warrington police show off new baseball-style caps

Earlier this year, Cheshire Police announced the force was abandoning the traditional bobby's helmet for new all-purpose baseball-style caps.

The new headgear for Cheshire's boys in blue is being introduced across the county - and it's just arrived in Warrington, where there seems to be something of a constable's catwalk.

Tall ship marks Liverpool Royal Mail connection for 500th anniversary

A tall ship has arrived in Liverpool as part of the celebrations for the Royal Mail's 500th anniversary. 

The TS Royalist, which closely resembles a packet ship that would once have sailed from the city, arrived at the Albert Dock dock from Scotland flying a specially commissioned sail in honour of the occasion. 

Rhys Jones from the Royal Mail says they wanted to highlight the historical importance of Liverpool to the postal service.

Rare chalices, a tabernacle and some cash have been stolen from a Merseyside church.

Police said thieves smashed a ground floor window to enter St Mary's & St John's Roman Catholic Church in Crow Lane East in Newton-le-Willows.

They made off with seven silver chalices, a gold chalice and a gold-coloured dome-shaped tabernacle.

Det Con Roy Waller appealed to the burglars' consciences to return the haul, adding: "The items are rare and distinctive and would be almost impossible to replace."

Super League: St. Helens pair handed two-game bans

St. Helens pair Luke Walsh and Luke Thompson have each been handed two-match bans for offences during Friday's Super League win against Catalans.

Scrum-half Walsh, 29, was deemed to have thrown Lucas Albert to the ground in the first half of the 39-16 victory.

Thompson, a 21-year-old back row forward, was cited for a shoulder charge on Justin Horo after the break.

Both players, who pleaded not guilty, have also been fined £300, with Saints yet to indicate if they will appeal.

Dallas star to join Holloyoaks

Actress Linda Gray, best known for her long-running role as Sue Ellen Ewing in US soap opera Dallas, is to join the cast of Channel 4's Hollyoaks.

Gray, 75, will play Tabitha, aka Tabby, the mother of Lysette Anthony's Marnie Nightingale character in the Chester-based soap. 

"I'm thrilled to be going from one iconic series to another," said Gray, promising Tabby would "whip up a storm just like Sue Ellen did".

Executive producer Bryan Kirkwood said she was "an international TV icon".

Labour conference could be cancelled in security row, says GMB

Labour's annual conference in Liverpool could be cancelled in a row over security, a trade union has claimed.

The GMB said the refusal by the chosen security company to sign a union agreement was against Labour's rules and it was calling on the party to find an alternative contractor for next month's event. 

The company, Showsec, said it was "not anti-unions in any way" and Labour sources said they were confident the conference would go ahead as planned.

Student to become first family member to head to university

Louise O'Brien will be the first member of her family to attend university when she enrols on to an Egyptology and Classical Studies course at the University of Liverpool next month. 

The 18-year-old from Wigan scored A-levels in Medieval History, English Literature and Chemistry.

My family were very surprised but very supportive when I told them I was hoping to go to university.

I have always been interested in ancient history, ever since I was a kid and started reading Percy Jackson books

Most people are quite surprised when I tell them what I'm going to study because they didn't know you could do a degree in it

Labour Party 'fringe event' to run alongside party conference in Liverpool

The Labour Party organisation Momentum has announced plans to hold a national event in Liverpool to coincide with the Labour Party Conference.

Everton scout Sid Benson dies

Some sad news from Everton this morning - scout Sid Benson has died.

He was the Toffees scout who discovered Ross Barkley and Wayne Rooney among others.

In an statement, the club said it was "deeply saddened" by the news and would be posting a full tribute later.
