Travel: Train cancellations on services to Lime Street

BBC Travel

Trains to Liverpool Lime Street are being cancelled due to a person being hit by a train at West Allerton.

  • Virgin Trains West Coast between Runcorn and Liverpool Lime Street are cancelled
  • There is no service on Northern and First Transpennine Express both ways between Warrington Central and Liverpool Lime Street, with services being diverted via Earlestown and trains terminating at Warrington Central
  • Cancellations on London Midland between Liverpool South Parkway and Liverpool Lime Street 

Tickets are being accepted on Northern, Merseyrail, Arriva Trains Wales and London Midland services.

Plans to transform Southport Pier have been submitted to Sefton Council.

Family pay tribute to 'full of life' Scott Edwards

The family of a Crosby man who died after he was struck by a lorry on the M58 yesterday afternoon have paid tribute to him.

In a statement, the family said: "Scott was many positive things to us, he was full of life, he was a massive presence and had the greatest sense of humour which will be sorely missed."

Forty-year-old Scott Edwards was on the inside lane of the motorway between Bickerstaff and Switch Island when the accident happened.

Anthony Showers pleads guilty to Liverpool double murder

Anthony Showers, 42, has pleaded guilty to the murder of a mother and daughter at Liverpool Crown Court today.

Karen and Jade Hales, aged 53 and 28, were found dead at a property in Cathedral Road, Anfield, Liverpool in June.

He has been remanded in custody and is expected to be sentenced at a later date.

Mother Teresa exhibition opens in Toxteth

An exhibition telling the story of Mother Teresa of Calcutta has opened in St Patrick's Roman Catholic Church on Park Place.

The exhibition, which runs until 11 September, is marking the canonisation of the nun who became celebrated for her work among dying people in India.

Liverpool was the second city in the UK where the order of nuns she founded opened a convent.

Mother Teresa visited her community in Seel Street in 1996, a year before her death.

Pedestrian in hospital after being hit by car in Warrington

A pedestrian has been taken to hospital with leg injuries after being hit by a car in Warrington this morning. 

Emergency services were called to Longshaw Street in Dallam to help the injured person. 

They were taken to Aintree Hospital and police are trying to trace the driver of the car, which did not stop at the scene.

Saltney distribution centre to close putting 53 jobs at risk

Police appeal after girls assaulted on bus

Police are appealing for witnesses after three girls were assaulted on a bus travelling from St. Helens to Liverpool on Saturday.

A 10-year-old and two 14-year-olds were assaulted by three teenage boys on the 10A bus near Nutgrove at about 16:20.

Merseyside Police say two of the boys were described as 16-year-old and “lanky” with long shoulder length hair and the third as 14 with ginger hair and wearing a black hat.

Merseyside's Melanie Chisholm - aka Mel C - has said it was a "difficult decision" not to join the Spice Girls reunion - but "something didn't feel quite right and I had to follow my gut".

In a piece for Love magazine, Sporty Spice explained why she will not join her former bandmates on stage.

Liverpool City Council and Everton deny stadium plans

Liverpool City Council and Everton have denied claims by the city's mayor that a new stadium for the football club is "closer than it’s ever been".

Joe Anderson wrote on Twitter that the stadium was "closer now than it was last month" and hinted at a location when asked by a site user by using the phrase "the Moore the merrier" - which may be a reference to Bramley Moore dock.

However, both the club and council today confirmed that they are still looking at alternative sites within the city.

Over 13,000 people have signed a petition calling for a full excavation of Chester's Roman amphitheatre - and tonight, a special debate takes place on the issue.

Cheshire West and Chester Council is due to sell land on top of the covered half of the ancient site.  

MP Chris Matheson will chair the meeting to discuss the future of Dee House - the 1730 building which stands on land above the amphitheatre. 

Campaigners describe it as an eyesore and want to uncover the remaining Roman amphitheatre - but heritage campaigners argue the building is important in its own right and the remaining ampithetare will have been damaged by building works.

The meeting takes place at Chester Town Hall from 18:30 tonight.
