Proton beam unit for Liverpool's £1bn Knowledge Quarter

A £35m proton beam therapy cancer treatment centre is to be built as part of a £1bn development .

The privately-run facility will be next to a new Royal College of Physicians site in the Knowledge Quarter in Paddington near Liverpool city centre.

The Rutherford Cancer Centre North West could treat up to 700 patient a year, including NHS ones, from 2018.

Wirral Council has said it is looking for investors to develop areas around the Woodside ferry terminal, the town centre and Hamilton Square.

It revealed the plan at  MIPIM , Europe's largest property expo in Cannes.

An earlier scheme was abandoned in October as the authority  sought "more ambitious" plans.

Couple's wedding to be screened on Songs of Praise

A couple's wedding day at a hospital in Southport has been filmed for the BBC's religious programme, Songs of Praise.

Frank Heath, 72, and 69-year-old Kate Hart had initially planned a small wedding in a ward day room at Southport and District General Hospital, but it became a TV event when they agreed to let camera crews from the BBC's Songs of Praise programme film the day.

Songs of Praise presenter Aled Jones said it was an "honour" to be involved.

Irish woman Danielle McLaughlin killed in Goa

Police are treating the death of an Irish woman found near a beach in the southern Indian state of Goa as murder.

The body of Danielle McLaughlin, who is believed to have been living in Liverpool, was discovered in an isolated spot close to tourist resorts in Canacona on Tuesday.

Ms McLaughlin, who was in her 20s and had lived in Buncrana, County Donegal, suffered injuries on her face and head.

Police are treating her death as murder. A post-mortem has been ordered to establish if she was sexually assaulted.

One person has been arrested and 15 questioned over the death, police said.

A British national - thought to be in her 20s and from Liverpool - has been found dead near a beach in Goa in south-west India. 

Her death is being treated as murder and a man has been arrested.

The grandparents of three children who were orphaned when their parents died of cancer days apart have said they are "horrified" by what has happened .

Six people charged over supply of Class A drugs after Cheshire raids

Six people have been charged over the supply of Class A drugs following raids in Runcorn, Widnes, Ellesmere Port and Warrington. 

Cheshire Police were targeting suspected crime gangs in the region. 

Two weeks ago 14 people from Merseyside were arrested and charged by the same operation.

PC Dave Phillips: Clayton Williams sentence appeal to be heard

A car thief who was jailed for the manslaughter of a Merseyside policeman by running him over in a stolen pick-up truck in Wirral, is due to have an appeal against his sentence heard in court later.

Clayton Williams was given a 20-year sentence, after he struck PC Dave Phillips, during a police pursuit in Wallasey 18 months ago. 

The father of two was putting a stinger device in the road when he was hit by the vehicle.

The deal to secure the unit - which uses proton beam therapy - was announced today the world property expo in Cannes. 

The privately-run facility will be built close to the new £440m Royal Liverpool Hospital in part of what is known as the Liverpool's Knowledge Quarter.
