Robbers armed with Samurai swords sought by police

Robbers who raided two premises within an hour are being hunted by police.

Two men with Samurai swords forced the manager to empty a safe in the Henry Boddington's pub in Bolton Road, Swinton, on 9 April.

Then about 50 minutes later two men burst into Worsley Old Hall, in Walkden Road, threatening the manager before stealing cash from the safe.

It is believed a third man was waiting outside.

Police are appealing for anyone with information to contact them.

Cricket: Lancashire draw against Surrey after 470 runs

Longridge residents 'angry' over bank closures

Residents and business owners in Longridge are "angry" and "disappointed" by the decision to close all bank branches in the town.

It comes as the British Bank Association said more customers want a 24-hour-digital service. 

NatWest is closing its branch in June, the last branch in the town ran by Lloyds closed in September.

Lloyds said it will be running a new mobile bank branch service which will visit the Longridge area, while NatWest said the demand for online and mobile banking outweighs in-branch transactions, but will communicate closely with all customers.

Boy, 12, and four teens arrested after 'metal bars' street attack

A 12-year-old boy was among five children arrested after a man was beaten with "metal bars" in a Manchester street, police have said.

The 29-year-old victim is in a critical condition condition after being found unconscious in Chinley Avenue, Moston, at 21:00 BST on Saturday.

Five boys, aged 12 to 17, and a man, 32, have been arrested on suspicion of assault. All six remain in custody.

Police said the victim suffered a head wound.

Bijou Club axe attack leaves man with serious injuries

A man suffered serious head injuries in an axe attack at a nightclub.

It happened at about 04:00 BST at the Bijou Club, in Chapel Street, Manchester, which bills itself as a "celebrity hang-out".

Police said the victim, 31, was in a serious but stable condition.

"This was a particularly nasty assault, during which this victim sustained serious head injuries which at first were thought to be life threatening," said Det Ch Insp Elizabeth Hopkinson.

The Government will be asked to step in and help with the regeneration of New Ferry today following the recent explosion in the town.
