Patrick Francis told Birmingham Crown Court that he was having a cigarette in Stanley Road, Northampton, when he saw an older man and a younger woman cross the road.

He said: "She seemed as if she was drunk because she was holding onto the railing, and the guy with her was by her side."

Mr Francis said the man had taken her arm and guided her inside a house along the street.

Two days later he saw a news appeal for information about Miss Chipchase, 20.

When police broke down the door of the house on 31 January they found the body of Miss Chipchase, who was on a mattress in the upstairs front bedroom, covered by a sheet.

Edward Tenniswood, 52, from Stanley Road in Northampton denies raping and murdering Miss Chipchase.

The 20-year-old Northampton woman had been with a group of friends at NB's nightclub in Northampton on 29 January. It was in the early hours of Saturday that the group noticed she was gone.

Harry Moylan told Birmingham Crown Court that he had just bought a round of drinks: "When I turned around, India wasn't there."

After about 10 to 15 minutes, he and another friend decided to look for her.

"It's out of character for her to leave without saying anything," he said. "We looked everywhere for her but we couldn't find her."

Mr Moylan said they thought she'd gone home or met up with other friends.

Edward Tenniswood, 52, from Stanley Road in Northampton denies the charges of murder and rape. The trial continues.

The key findings affecting the department include:

  • Patients requiring emergency treatment were not always identified in a timely way, leading to delays in care
  • Patient records within the paediatric area of the emergency department were not always stored securely and were accessible to anyone who entered
  • Patients’ privacy and dignity were not always respected whilst being cared for in the corridor of the emergency department

The inspectors pointed out that staff were caring and considerate towards patients and their families.
