M1 crash 'rubberneckers' shouted abuse at police

Emergency crews dealing with the aftermath of a crash on the M1 in Northamptonshire were verbally abused by "rubberneckers", a police officer has claimed.

The eight-vehicle crash between junctions 15a and 16 caused delays on the northbound carriageway on Wednesday.

PC Dave Lee tweeted that "rubberneckers" on the southbound carriageway were shouting abuse and "giving us the middle finger".

"Disgraceful behaviour. Shame on you", he said.

Northamptonshire Police said officers were too busy to take any details of offenders. No-one was seriously hurt in the crash.

Councils invest £90m in property

Laura Devlin

BBC News

Northamptonshire's councils are bringing in almost £7m each year through a portfolio of external properties worth more than £90m, figures obtained by the BBC have revealed.

The eight local authorities have invested £30m in sites across the county in the last three years alone.

This includes £21m spent by Corby Borough Council on an industrial unit in Curver Way, which brings a return of £1.6m a year to spend on local services.

Labour MP Meg Hillier, chairman of the public accounts committee, said external investment was not without risk.

"The question is, have they got the skills and understanding to do a good job? Where is the oversight and how expert is that oversight? That's a real challenge, both for local councils and government," she said.

Scrapping of Greyfriars scheme 'an opportunity'

Craig Lewis

BBC Northampton Politics Reporter

Plans for a development featuring restaurants, a hotel and either a cinema or trampoline centre at Northampton's Greyfriars site have been scrapped.

Northampton Borough Council's Cabinet last night agreed a motion to "part ways" with Carter Endurance after the developer said it couldn't deliver on promises for the housing element of the scheme.

The old "brutalist" concrete bus station was demolished in March 2015 and the site has been unused ever since.

Conservative council leader Jonathan Nunn said he agreed with many opponents of the original scheme, adding he had concerns over traffic issues and "a bit of risk we hadn't bottomed-out adequately".

"I think it is an opportunity," he added. "It is a chance for a re-think."

Watford Toys R Us store due to close in the spring

Following Tuesday's news that Toys R Us is to shut 'at least' 26 UK stores, the company has confirmed that the Watford store will close.

The toy chain, which has 106 stores in the UK, said its closures would start in spring next year and that there would be "no disruption for customers" over Christmas and New Year.

In Hertfordshire, the Watford store in Century Park will close in spring 2018 if the proposals are accepted but Stevenage will remain open.

The company said the intention is for the Bedford, Luton and Milton Keynes stores to remain open but the company is reviewing options including downsizing or a possible reduction in rent.

Toys R US said online shopping would be unaffected by the plans and that there would be no changes to its returns policies or gift cards across the festive period.

Council to meet to discuss future of Greyfriars site

Craig Lewis

BBC Northampton Politics Reporter

The re-development of the Greyfriars bus station site is set to be discussed by councillors at a meeting this evening.

The old brutalist bus station was demolished back in March 2015.

Developers Carter Endurance have since seen plans for restaurants, a hotel, a coach station and either a cinema or a trampoline centre at the site approved.

The proposals also featured student and retirement accommodation.

Papers set to be discussed by Northampton Borough Council tonight suggest Carter Endurance is unable to achieve its original offer and has submitted a revised application.

The Cabinet papers recommend the council "parts ways" with Carter Endurance, giving it the chance to "reconsider offers for the development of the whole site".

The developer has said the residential element of the proposal had proved difficult to finance, but has asked for more time to see if it can still deliver the project.

The Greyfriars scheme is one of a number in Northampton which are either behind-schedule or over-budget.

Corby Cube still not fully occupied

Seven years after it opened, the Corby Cube is still not fully occupied.

The civic building cost an estimated £48m - £13m over budget - and contains council offices, a library and theatre.

Two years ago, the top floor of the building was marketed as office space but there were no takers; now the local borough council has now spent £180,000 converting the open-plan top floor into four offices.

"We are aware of the difficulties we had with this building initially," said Corby Borough Council leader Tom Beattie. "But I am very confident and very proud of this building."

"It has really transformed the landscape here in the town centre. We would have liked to have seen all four floors of the building in use sooner than we have done, but we are where we are."
