Corby Urgent Care Centre plans to be scrutinised

The future of Corby's Urgent Care Centre will be discussed at a public meeting at the Cube this evening.

About 70,000 people a year have been getting healthcare by turning up at the centre on Cottingham Road, but under new plans they would have to book a same-day appointment by calling their GP first.

The NHS Corby Clinical Commissioning Group said the new system would help direct patients to the right part of the NHS for treatment and reduce A&E attendances at Kettering General Hospital.

Couple campaign for NHS tests for baby-killing bacteria

A couple from Desborough have set up a campaign calling on the NHS to provide expectant mums with a £35 test for a potentially-fatal bacteria in unborn babies.

Group B Streptococcus is carried by one-in-four women and can infect a baby's lungs, blood and brain, though only about one-in-2,000 newborns falls ill because of it.

Amanda Osbourne and Jason Barnes's daughter Mia died from the bacteria four years ago, and they believe she would have survived if they had been given more information about it.

Mr Barnes said: "It's very clear the UK does have a problem in awareness of infections such as Group B Strep.

"A pregnant lady is not screened for the infection as part of her routine anti-natal care and that's something we believe needs to change."
