Tory MP congratulates 18 Labour MPs over Russia motion

Business statement

House of Commons

Parliament

Conservative MP Peter Bone congratulates 18 Labour MPs who have signed an early day motion in support of Theresa May's decision to expel twenty three Russian diplomats, following the poisoning of a spy and his daughter in Salisbury.

The move appears to be a snub to Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn, who has questioned whether the nerve agent attack was the work of President Putin's regime.

The motion was tabled by John Woodcock, an opponent of Mr Corbyn, and "unequivocally" accepts the "Russian state's culpability" for the attack, and says it would consider supporting "further proportionate action to deter future acts of aggression by the Russian state".

Northamptonshire Fire and Rescue Service has warned people in Daventry to "avoid" smoke from a warehouse, which is still smouldering after a large fire on Sunday night.

A plume of smoke could be seen rising from the building on Monday afternoon

A spokesman said: "While the smoke is not toxic, residents are advised to keep it out of their homes by keeping doors and windows closed.

"They are also advised not to expose themselves to the smoke unnecessarily and not to breathe it in."

More than 50 firefighters were called to the building in Parsons Road, which is owned by garden centre suppliers Gardman, and the roof appears to have collapsed.

Raped woman married-off for money and visa, court told

Justice statue
BBC

A woman who suffered a head injury when she was raped was married-off by her father for money, a court heard.

The marriage also took place to improve her husband's immigration status, London's Court of Protection heard.

Mr Justice Baker decided the Islamic marriage was "arranged entirely" by the man and the woman's father.

He said the marriage took place at Northampton Islamic Centre when the woman was vulnerable to influence and ruled it was invalid under English law.

The woman, who cannot be identified, has links to London and Northampton.
