'Careless' batting by Northants

Northamptonshire 117-6 (43 overs) v Warwickshire

Alex Winter

BBC Radio Northampton sport at Wantage Road

Gorgeous day at Wantage Road and on a fairly slow wicket, Northamptonshire would have been hoping to build up a decent total having won the toss.

But they've batted rather carelessly. Four batsmen have been dismissed pulling - Rob Keogh the last, missing a straight ball from Jeetan Patel - and Northants are now in danger of falling well short of what you would think is a competitive total. There hasn't been too much help for the bowlers outside the first hour.

A great shame this morning when Olly Stone went down injured in the warm-up. Seeing him tearing in against his old club would have been quite a sight. Not to be.

Wellingborough: Jacksons Lane development approved

Local Democracy Reporting Service

About 500 parking spaces will be lost from Wellingborough town centre after councillors voted to approve an application for 114 homes in the Jacksons Lane car park and High Street area.

The decision to get rid of the car park required a casting vote from Wellingborough Borough Council's planning committee chairman after a vote between councillors was tied at five each.

As he passed the plans a member of the public gallery shouted "shame on you".

The development will feature 85 houses and 29 apartments plus new roads and some car parking space.

The meeting heard that trade in Wellingborough had fallen by 15% since the nearby Rushden Lakes shopping complex opened last year.

Social care pressures undermine council proposals - report

Sam Read

BBC Radio Northampton politics reporter

No model of local government in Northamptonshire is viable unless something is done about social care pressures, according to a report by a leading consultant leaked to BBC Radio Northampton.

In March, a government report suggested that cash-strapped Northamptonshire County Council should be scrapped.

The report by Deloitte says, when it comes to financial savings, the best option for re-organisation is one big new council to run all services for the county, saving £100m over 10 years.

But that option has already been ruled out by the government, and this work was mostly carried out before a recent inspection at the county council that recommended two councils.

This new study, paid for by district and borough councils, says that when factors like community geographies are carried out three councils for the county is the best option.

However, it adds: "Because of the ongoing pressure on social care services and without transformation and resources being committed to social care services, none of the unitary options in this report are likely to be financially viable."

Isham warehouse plan refused

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Village campaigners fighting against a huge warehouse park have secured a victory over developers.

There were jubilant scenes at Kettering Borough Council last night as the planning committee refused plans for the controversial warehouse park proposed for the outskirts of Isham, on land north of the A509.

It was a surprise outcome for more than 70 protesters who had packed into the council chamber, after Kettering's planning officer had recommended the 200,000 sq m warehouse scheme be approved.

But councillors decided to refuse the application on the grounds of an "unacceptable highway impact" and because it would have a "detrimental impact on the people of Isham".

Speakers at the meeting told the planning committee the development must not go ahead until after the long-awaited Isham bypass is built.

Plans for the bypass have been in place for many years, but the millions needed to build the road have not been gathered by the cash-strapped Northamptonshire County Council.

'Much-loved' aviary vandalised at Northampton park

An aviary in a Northampton park has been vandalised, causing £1,000 of damage and allowing "a number" of birds to escape.

A hole was found in the side of a cage at Abington Park, where canaries and other varieties are kept, but has since been temporarily patched up awaiting repairs.

Councillor Mike Hallam said: "This deliberate damage to one of Abington Park’s much-loved attractions is unacceptable.

"It is important to remember that the birds kept in the cages are not wild and are likely to struggle to survive if not located and caught again."
