Glen Banks, from the Northampton-based Knife, Gun and Youth Crime Awareness Programme, said they were the youngest person in the county he had known to have a knife.

"It's getting younger and younger and it's getting very worrying," said Mr Banks, a former prison worker.

"Nobody goes out in the morning thinking they are going to lose their lives."

Figures released on Thursday revealed recorded knife crime has risen by nearly 50% in the county over the last five years.

In 2017, 473 incidents were recorded by the force.

The figures were released the day after an 18-year-old was convicted of stabbing Liam Hunt, 17, to deathin Northampton last year.

Kettering twins with Jamaican town of Falmouth

A plan to twin Kettering with the Jamaican town of Falmouth has been given the green light.

Kettering Borough Council voted the proposals through at its full council meeting last night.

BBC

The motion to twin with Falmouth said the aim was to celebrate the "shared heritage of the life and works of William Knibb".

Knibb was a Kettering-born baptist minister and missionary to Jamaica, whose campaigning helped emancipate slaves in the British colonies in the mid-19th Century.

Current links between Knibb and Falmouth include the William Knibb Memorial High School, which Jamaican sprint legend Usain Bolt attended.

The move doesn't come with any cost, as there would not be delegations of councillors flying over to Jamaica.

Rugby: Cope to leave Jersey Reds

Brent Pilnick

BBC Sport

Jersey Reds fly-half is the leave the island side after three seasons.

The 24-year-old South African is joining Championship rivals Yorkshire Carnegie.

Cope has scored two tries this season and is the current top points scorer in this season’s British & Irish Cup - getting 12 of Jersey's 27 in their 29-27 loss to Leinster 'A' in last week's semi-final.

Brendan Cope
Steve Lund

"I am very pleased to be joining the club. This is a great opportunity for me and I am very excited about the future," Cope told Yorkshire's website.

"I have played against Yorkshire a few times with Jersey and I like the style they play with.

"There are quite a few ex-Jersey players in the Carnegie ranks, so I am sure that will make it easier settling in."

'Missing millions' documents 'will take several months to complete'

It will "take several months" to examine "complex material" in the Northampton Town missing millions case, according to Northamptonshire Police.

The force is currently in the process of extracting "specific details" from the case for the Crown Prosecution Service.

The borough council loaned £10.25m to Northampton Town to redevelop the stadium and nearby land, but the funds have seemingly vanished.

A police spokesman said the force was continuing its "extensive investigation into the complex circumstances of the failed Sixfields development".

He added: "Alongside the ongoing investigative activity, staff are also engaged in the arduous process of examining the vast quantities of complex material.

"This process is necessary to extract the specific details that need to be prepared, explained and presented to the Crown Prosecution Service in a logical format.

"It is anticipated that this will take several months to complete."

Kettering to twin with Falmouth, Jamaica

Local Democracy Reporting Service

Kettering could soon have a Caribbean twin town if a proposal goes ahead.

The motion to twin with Falmouth in Jamaica to celebrate the "shared heritage of the life and works of William Knibb" will be considered at Kettering's full council meeting tomorrow.

Knibb was a Kettering-born baptist minister and missionary to Jamaica, whose campaigning helped emancipate slaves in the British colonies in the mid-19th Century.

Philip Hollobone
BBC

The motion is being proposed by councillor Philip Hollobone (above), who is also the Conservative MP for Kettering, and seconded by Labour councillor Mick Scrimshaw.

Mr Scrimshaw said: "What William Knibb did 200 years ago was a big deal and should always be remembered."

The move would not come with any cost, as there would not be delegations of councillors flying over to Jamaica.

Kettering is currently twinned with Lahnstein in Germany and has Sister City Links with Kettering in Ohio, USA.

Homeless figures for Corby more than double

Local Democracy Reporting Service

The number of people presenting themselves as homeless in Corby has more than doubled in the past four years.

Corby Borough Council says the hike in the number of cases is due to more people being unable to keep up with the monthly payments for their private rental properties.

In the financial year 2017-18 there were 146 homelessness presentations to the authority's housing options team.

This compares to 61 in 2014-15, an increase of 139%.

The report said: "Private rental sector (PRS) increases and benefit reductions are also making placing homeless cases into the PRS increasingly difficult."

There are currently 1,128 active applications on the council's social housing waiting list.
