New village centre and apartments approved following delay

Local Democracy Reporting Service

A new village centre, apartment scheme, retail units and public open space works have been approved for Corby borough's newest village.

After years of hold ups, Little Stanion will now have a village hall plus shops and play areas after two separate planning applications were approved by Corby councillors on Tuesday.

The building of amenities for the village off the A43 had stalled several years ago after the developer Silent Pride went into administration.

The company came out of administration last year and following involvement with the council a new scheme has been created.

Director of Silent Pride's parent company JME, Civils James Moore, said "We will start work on the first two luxury apartments in August and then start work on the new village hall."

Historic England to help with repairs to Eleanor Cross

Historic England will contribute towards "urgent conservation work" on Northampton’s Eleanor Cross.

The 13th Century monument, erected by King Edward I in memory of his wife, will also be added to Historic England's Heritage at Risk Register with the "expectation" that it can be removed again as soon as repairs are complete.

Campaigners had called for urgent repairs to the cross last year, but at the time neither Northampton Borough Council nor Northamptonshire County Council claimed ownership for Eleanor Cross.

However, the borough council later said it would make sure the cross on London Road was maintained as an important monument.

The authority has been working with Historic England for a number of months and an application has also been made by the council for grant funding which will enable the Grade I listed building – also a Scheduled Monument – to be preserved.

Future of forest walkway in doubt

The long-term future of a "well-loved" Northamptonshire visitor attraction is in doubt after it was closed on Thursday over safety concerns.

The Tree Top Way, which opened in 2005, is a raised wooden platform at Salcey Forest, south of Northampton.

A routine inspection found potential problems with the structure and, since Friday, more than 24,000 people have signed an online petition calling for it to be saved.

The Forestry Commission, which runs the site, said it was too early to tell if and when it would reopen.

Recreation manager Andy Coggins, said: "It's had hundreds of thousand of people use it over the years and it's taken a battering.

"It's an iconic and well-loved attraction and it would be really sad if it was lost, but we'll look at a range of options then make a decision once we have a report from engineers.

"Hopefully we'll be able to make that decision before the summer."

Don McLean adds name to charity guitar

The American singer-songwriter added his name to the instrument when he met with guitar owner Dave Allen and charity worker Andy Goss.

The Fender Stratocaster has already been signed by Eric Clapton, Brian May and Jimmy Page. It went missing 10 years ago but was recovered by Leicestershire Police earlier this year.

The guitar will be sold at auction for Rainbows in December - and it's hoped more rock "legends" will have signed it by then. Those approached to add their names include Alice Cooper, The Hollywood Vampires, Sir Paul McCartney, Keith Richards, Jeff Beck and Ozzy Osbourne.

Plans for single council in Northampton to be discussed

Plans for Northampton to be run by a single "unitary" council will be discussed at a special meeting tonight.

Currently, local services are split between Northampton Borough Council and Northamptonshire County Council, which has been suffering a financial crisis.

BBC

A government-appointed inspector suggested all councils in the county should be replaced with just two - one covering Daventry, Northampton and South Northamptonshire and the other covering Corby, East Northamptonshire, Kettering and Wellingborough.

This has the support of the county's seven MPs, but Northampton Borough Council thinks Northampton should go it alone and be run by a unitary authority.

A council meeting tonight will discuss raising awareness of the idea and selling it to local residents and businesses.
