Rufford monks whipped themselves 'to ward off plague'

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

The medieval whip found at the former Cistercian monastery at Rufford is thought to date back to shortly after the Black Death in 1348-50 when the practice of using scourges grew in popularity in an attempt to ward off the plague.

The Black Death, which killed between 30% and 45% of the population, is seen as the root of the decline of Rufford Abbey, which lost much of its income from the wool industry.

An ancient whip uncovered at Rufford Abbey is believed to be one of only four metal scourges in the country.

Archaeologists who uncovered the copper artefact at the medieval Nottinghamshire monastery believe it was used by monks to whip themselves.

A similar metal scourge is on display at Rievaulx Abbey in Yorkshire while others have been found at Grovebury Priory, or La Grava, in Bedfordshire and Roche Abbey in South Yorkshire.

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

The chairman of the DH Lawrence Society says more could have been done in the past to promote Durban House, which has now been closed by Broxtowe Borough Council.

Malcolm Gray said Lawrence's birthplace was too small and had little room to accommodate a school group.

He added that the society would "keep fighting" the decision.

The campaign to keep Durban House open was led by Labour MP Gloria De Piero, and supported by screenwriter William Ivory, double Oscar-winning actress Glenda Jackson (pictured) and actor Robert Lindsay.

DH Lawrence centre closure 'not a slap in face' to literature status

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

But will the closure affect Nottingham's status as a UNESCO City of Literature?

DH Lawrence centre closure 'exciting'

Dave Wade

BBC Local Live

The cultural services manager at Broxtowe Borough Council has described the closure of the DH Lawrence Heritage Centre in Eastwood as "quite exciting".

The authority is closing Durban House at lunchtime today in a bid to save £80,000 a year.

Alex Khan said it's being merged with the Birthplace Museum (pictured), also in the town.

"I actually find it quite exciting - it puts the focus of the DH Lawrence Heritage service back somewhere it has a very strong link," he said.

"Lawrence was born there, we've got artefacts that relate to his life and his family and Victorian life - it's a great place to learn about British history as well as about literature and the Lawrence family."
