Tram extension could cost hundreds of millions

Chris Doidge

BBC Radio Derby political reporter

We can't be absolutely sure how much the trams will cost but one figure being talked about is £555m.

I asked Andrew Pritchard from East Midlands Councils, the organisation doing a lot of this planning work, if it was affordable and he said they were looking at ways of funding the project rather than "presenting the government with a big bill".

Tram 'most expensive' of options

There's still no guarantee that a tram will be chosen and there's work going on to see whether high-speed 'buses' could be used on the A52 in a dedicated lane so they don't get stuck in traffic.

But the tram is the most eye-catching option and probably the most expensive.

What are the suggested routes?

Sandish Shoker

These are the possible routes for the tram extension.

One - the most direct - would go from the Bardills park and ride, through Toton, and follow the A52 into Derby city centre.

Another would see the tram follow the A6005, going through Borrowash and Spondon. That would be slower, but it might pick up more passengers.
