Supt Tedhill asked "for calm" within the community and asked people not to take matters into their own hands. 

"We are aware some people are very angry about this and some people who will be close to the young man who died and we want to make it clear that taking matters into their own hands is not the right thing to do."

Supt Ted Anthill has told BBC Radio Nottingham the stabbing in Russell Road was "extremely distressing".

He said a post mortem examination was still due to be carried out so they couldn't confirm the man had been stabbed with a knife until then.

"What happened clearly will have been shocking to people but these types of incidents are very rare," he said.

"There's a lot of information in the community and we are keen to get all that to help us investigate this."

Bennett joins Newport from Notts County

Newport County have signed Scot Bennett on a two-year contract after he was released by Notts this week.

He was signed on loan by the club last season by then Newport boss John Sheridan - who is now with the Magpies.

Incinerator plans approved after long wait

Two years ago the then communities secretary Eric Pickles put a hold on the application after it was approved by the county council.

He said the go-ahead should not be given for the £70m incinerator until he had looked at the plans.

Plans for a controversial incinerator at Bilsthorpe will go ahead despite a hard fought campaign to stop the development.

The area's county councillor John Peck described the secretary of state's decision as "devastating for the community because of the potential risk to health and the environment".

Russell Road in Forest Fields is still closed this afternoon following the stabbing there last night. There's a police cordon between the junction with Gregory Boulevard and Austen Avenue.

Community has got behind new skate park

Rhianne and Beth raised £150,000 for the Eastwood skate park from school concerts, supermarket bag packs and other fundraising events.

The rest of the money came from local businesses and the councils.

Stab victim named locally

The man who died after being found with stab wounds in Russell Road last night has been named locally as Aqib Mazhar.

The Jamia Masjid Sultania mosque in Sneinton wrote in a tribute on its Facebook page: "Please remember young brother Aqib Mazhar in your duas.

"He sadly passed away in the evening."

Teenagers wanted 'somewhere safe to play'

Rhianne Lounds began raising the money for the skate park in Coronation Park with her friend Beth Lee when they were 13.

"We used to play here as kids quite a few years ago and we said if we wanted to change anything about this area, we wanted somewhere safe to play and hang out without causing trouble," she said.

Man dies outside hospital

Police want to hear from anyone who might have seen a man being dropped off outside Bassetlaw Hospital in Worksop shortly before he collapsed in the road and died.

It happened on Tuesday shortly before 21:30.

The skate park in Eastwood has opened this afternoon with plenty of youngsters turning up with their bikes and skateboards to try it out.

The park is thought to be one of the largest in Nottinghamshire and as well as the money raised by the two teenagers, funding came from the county council and Broxtowe Borough Council.

Eye witness tried to save man's life

Another eye-witness has been talking to BBC East Midlands Today about what she saw in Russell Road last night.

She said she saw a group of people with poles throwing bricks and smashing a car window before the injured man collapsed on her driveway.

She said while on the phone to 999 she put him in the recovery position and waited almost 15 minutes for an ambulance to arrive.

Skate park opens after years of fundraising

A new £250,000 skate park opens in Coronation Park, Eastwood, today.

Fundraising for the park was started by two local schoolgirls five years ago. 

Now aged 18 and studying at university, Rhianne Lounds and Beth Lee are seeing the park open for children in the area later this afternoon.

Witness saw 'lots of blood' on street

"I wasn't surprised [he died] because I saw the police doing CPR on him and they didn't wait for the ambulance to come so it must have been serious, and the amount of blood and things," she said.

Holidays can 'help children's learning' says dad

Speaking to BBC Radio Nottingham this morning David Hedley said he knew some teachers had signed the petition and were supportive of a more relaxed system.

"Every adult can remember back to a childhood holiday and those memories stay with you for life," he said.

"Holidays are not just educational, they can increase brain activity and learning ability, so they can help when you get back to the classroom."

Dad gathers thousands of signatures

Dad, David Hedley, took up his fight after being fined £240 for taking a family break before his partner started treatment for breast cancer.

In just three days, more than 130,000 people signed his petition calling for the government to bring back 10 days of authorised absence - which were allowed before the law changed in 2013.

Signatures on the petition are now at 170,000 which means it has to be debated in the Commons. 

Last month the government said it would look again at changing the law on school absences after the High Court ruled in favour of another man who took his daughter on holiday during term time.

A dad from Stapleford who started a petition for schools to allow parents to take to their children on holiday during term time has managed to secure a parliamentary debate.

That means MPs will discuss next month whether the policy to fine parents who take their child out of school should be scrapped or not.

Another Russell Road resident, who saw what happened and did not want to be named, said she had lived in the street for 40 years but there had "never been much trouble".

She said she heard a bang last night and thought there had been a crash but when she looked out the window she saw the assault on the man.

She said she saw police carrying out CPR on him before he was taken to hospital.

Cricket: Outlaws were 'ordinary' says Newell

Nottinghamshire's director of cricket, Mick Newell, says his side were "very ordinary through large parts of the game" last night as they lost to Durham by 66 runs in the T20 Blast. 

Durham posted 178-7 with Notts then all out for 112. 

Only four Notts players made double figures as they lost their second successive T20 match.

Fatal assault leaves residents worried

Police believe the man who died after an assault in Hyson Green last night had been attacked with a knife.

Russell Road resident Naseem Aktar told BBC Radio Nottingham's Hayley Compton she came back to her house last night at 21:30 to find the road closed off by police.

"I was very worried thinking something had happened outside my house," she said.
