Laing said he 'played best football' at Notts

Dentist told off staff for changing gloves

A witness at the hearing for Mr D'Mello said she was rebuked by the dentist for cleaning too much and told how she once found a soiled glove stuffed into a box of new ones. 

Dental nurse, Caroline Surgey, who was accused along with Mr D'Mello said he did not like her changing her gloves all the time.

She said he would make comments about other staff changing their gloves all the time and "going through gloves".

Charity wants to raise awareness of heart conditions

Charity CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) says it doesn't support a national screening programme because people should be able to choose whether they are tested.

Alison Cox from the charity told BBC Radio Nottingham: "We don't believe it should be mandatory but we believe in raising awareness and the support of the government to raise awareness of our screening programme which has been going for 18 years."

She said people aged between 14 and 35 could book free appointments through their website and 22,000 people took up the opportunity last year.

Mum said death 'didn't make sense'

Alex Reid was a keen swimmer and netball player and so active her mum Heather said her death "didn't make sense".

She said her daughter was sitting her GCSEs and one day wasn't feeling well but the next day she didn't wake up.

Dentist suspension led to huge patient recall

Secret filming at Desmond D'Mello's practice - the former Daybrook Dental Practice - in 2014 prompted his suspension, and the subsequent recall of 22,000 patients to be tested for blood-borne viruses.

It was called "the biggest NHS patient recall in history".

Workers should get what they're 'owed,' HMRC say

HM Revenue & Customs have spoken to the Guardian about the Sports Direct pay deal. 

"While we don’t discuss individual cases we won’t accept anything less than what’s owed," a statement from HMRC said.

Desmond D'Mello breaches secretly filmed

Desmond D'Mello was suspended in June 2014 after he was secretly filmed breaching clinical standards across three days at Daybrook Dental Practice.

A conduct hearing at the General Dental Council in London proved 55 allegations against him including failing to change gloves between patients and failing to put on a new surgical mask for each patient.

In its findings, the panel said: "Mr D'Mello was under a duty to maintain adequate infection control for patients and staff.

"Mr D'Mello's actions...were a departure from this duty and, there, constituted a failure to maintain adequate infection controls."

Dental nurse Caroline Surgey who worked with Mr D'Mello admitted more than 20 allegations of hygiene failures.

She told the hearing today she was scared to challenge the dentist for fear of losing her job.

Giving evidence she said she was "ashamed" and added: "I have let myself down, I have let my family down, I have let the profession down, I have let the patients down and I have let the public down and it will never, never happen again."  

Conduct panel proves most allegations against dentist

Last week we told you a conduct hearing into Nottingham dentist Desmond D'Mello at the General Dentist Council had started in London.

Today the panel at the three-week hearing said all but one of the 56 allegations against the Daybrook dentist had been proven.

Sports Direct back pay 'significant victory'

Workers employed by Sports Direct and through employment agency, The Best Connection, are expected to start getting the back pay in full towards the end of this month, says Unite.

Assistant general secretary Steve Turner calls the move a "significant victory" in the union's campaign.

Sports Direct: Back pay follows admission before MPs

Unite said the back pay follows an admission by retail tycoon Mike Ashley of non-payment of the minimum wage at a recent hearing of the House of Commons Business, Innovation and Skills (BiS) Select Committee.

Repayments for Sports Direct staff

Thousands of Sports Direct warehouse workers in Shirebrook are set to receive back pay totalling about £1m for non-payment of the minimum wage, according to the Unite union.

They say payments are to be back-dated to May 2012 and could be worth up to £1,000 for some workers.

The agreement includes workers directly employed by Sports Direct as well as staff hired through temporary employment agencies. 

Payments are expected to start being made from the end of this month.

Government rejected heart screening

Alexandra Reid was just 16 when she died suddenly from cardiac arrythmia in her sleep five years ago.

The government previously rejected calls for routine heart scanning in teenagers because they said current technology was inaccurate.

Fire at derelict warehouse

Hospital A&E to close overnight this week

Plans to close the accident and emergency department at Grantham Hospital overnight are to go ahead from Wednesday.

Protests against the decision were held over the weekend.

Health bosses decided to shut the department at night as part of a three-month trial because they say the unit is struggling to recruit emergency doctors. 

Notts need to put up a fight today

Nottinghamshire are up against it, as day three of the County Championship match against Hampshire gets under way this morning.

Notts were all out for 245 in their first innings, thanks largely to an unbeaten 70 from captain Chris Read. 

That meant Notts were 74 behind on first innings, and Hampshire were 106 for 1 at the close - so an overall lead of 180.
