Writer's 'dead crow' tribute to binman

Alex Smith

BBC News Online

I mentioned earlier that writer William Ivory worked as a binman in Nottinghamshire in his student days.

He has penned a further tribute to the late Malcolm Greaves (pictured with his son Paul), the inspiration for the writer's breakthrough comedy drama, Common As Muck.

"It's a sad day...as Malc was a lovely, larger than life, blur of a man and we had many happy, raucous, days on the bins together," he said.

"I'm fairly certain it was he who chucked a dead crow at me on Fisko tip because I'd been disrespectful towards the Royal Family. It hit me, broke up (maggots and all) led to a tremendous stench in the cab.

"This we remedied with an old can of Impulse disgorged into the wagon just after the rancid crow! The smell was even worse! We drove all day, windows down, choking."

Now, this story is very dear to my heart (being originally from Bristol). Hate to play up to the stereotype, but I grew up around this kind of stuff.

On a more serious note, Rachel's father John is gathering these vintage combine harvesters for this weekend's event.

He said it's a fitting way to raise money in his daughter's memory.

Special traffic lights just for station

Rebecca Dickson

Reporter, BBC Radio Nottingham

The current Central Fire Station on Shakespeare Street has served its time - and with an ageing building and ever more traffic on the roads, this new structure will provide a custom-built hub for Nottinghamshire Fire and Rescue Service.

Although London Road is one of the city's busiest routes, special traffic lights are being installed to make sure engines can respond to emergency calls quickly.

And, as public finances face a squeeze, the building will also provide a home for Nottingham City Council's emergency planning team. It should be up and running by next month.

So what happened to D'Mello patients?

Alex Smith

BBC News Online

Some 22,000 patients were recalled, 4,500 of whom were tested for blood-borne viruses.

Lawyer: D'Mello result has 'no impact' on patients

Alex Smith

BBC News Online

David Corless Smith, from the Dental Law Partnership, which represents 200 of D'Mello's ex-patients, said yesterday's result would have "precisely no impact on the patients that are bringing claims against Dr D'Mello".

"Unless Dr D'Mello is an extremely wealthy man, the majority of his patients will not receive any payout," he said.

Desmond D'Mello
BBC

"This is because Dr D'Mello's insurer, the Dental Defence Union, has declined to pay out on these claims.

"We are pursuing a number of claims into court in order to obtain judgement and discover whether Dr D'Mello is good for the money."

The General Dental Council said bringing the case was in the public interest.
