A yellow warning of snow has been issued from 00:05 on Friday to 18:00 on Saturday for Derby, Derbyshire and Leicestershire.

During Friday, increasingly frequent snow showers already affecting parts of Scotland, Northern Ireland and northern England will extend across many other northern and western parts of the UK.

Between 2-5cm of snow is likely in places in our region.

Icy surfaces are also likely to be an additional hazard, especially overnight.

There's a yellow warning for the whole East Midlands from 04:00 to 23:35 on Sunday.

This could lead to road, rail and air travel delays, with the potential for vehicles to become stranded or public transport to be cancelled.

Rural communities with limited access routes could become cut off.

Police want to speak to them after an 86-year-old woman's bag was stolen in Chesterfield.

The bag, which contained cash and a mobile phone, was stolen from the victim's walking aid, police believe, while she was shopping in Boots in Low Pavement on Tuesday 21 November.

She might have been followed from a nearby branch of Santander.

Cannabis plants worth £27k found

Cannabis plants with a street value of £27,000 were discovered at a property in Harworth today.

Nottinghamshire Police said the front shutter to the unit at the insecure property was believed to have been damaged during an attempted ram raid earlier.

A 32-year-old man was later arrested and remains in police custody.

Shocking dashcam footage has captured the moment a swerving lorry crashed into a car on the A1 in Nottinghamshire.

The driver, Craig Barlow, from Bridge Court in Newark, had been using his mobile phone.

The 34-year-old clipped the front of a lorry, causing him to swerve and hit a barrier, before crashing into the side of a 46-year-old woman’s car on 8 August.

No-one was seriously hurt, police said.

He must under take 180 hours of unpaid work after being found guilty of dangerous driving at a trial at Nottingham Crown Court.

He also been disqualified from driving for 12 months and ordered to pay a total of £1,085 in fines and will also need to pass an extended driving test when he is allowed to drive again.

The items were uncovered by a building company in land off the A60 this afternoon.

Nottinghamshire Police attended along with the bomb disposal unit to make sure the area was safe and the devices were safely removed.

It's thought the bombs, which were 15in long, were filled with sand and would have been used in training.

It's official. The East Midlands is home to the first Conservative winner of the Parliamentary Beard of the Year competition.

Mansfield's Ben Bradley received just under 50% of the online poll, beating Edinburgh South Labour MP Ian Murray, who got 45%.

Former Tory MP John Randall shared the award with Jeremy Corbyn (a seven-time champion) in 2012 but no Tory MP has been the outright winner.

Mr Bradley and Mr Murray had swapped the lead several times in recent days but the 27-year-old MP - Mansfield's first ever Tory MP clinched it at the last minute.

Police have released a picture of Charlie Pearce, the 17-year-old who has been found guilty of the attempted murder of a woman in Leicester.

Pearce, of West Avenue, Leicester, raped the woman in Victoria Park before bludgeoning her with a paving slab in July.

A jury at Leicester Crown Court found him guilty of attempted murder today.

Nottinghamshire Police tracked down 18 victims across the country, who'd all paid deposits of up to £100 via Gumtree and other sites.

They said the seller, who used pictures of kittens that didn't belong to him, seemed genuine and even talked about vaccinations.

Det Con Tony Sahota said: "You see the pics and you feel emotional, it tugs on the heart strings and draws people in."

Public warned stolen safe 'could start firing bullets'

People in the Heanor area have been told not to approach a missing safe containing bullets.

It was stolen from a house in Nelson Street on Saturday night and contained legally owned rifle ammunition.

A Derbyshire Police spokesperson said: "We don’t know if the thief managed to break into the safe but attempts to get into it could cause the bullets to fire."

Victim describes impact of 'horrific' Victoria Park attack

The victim of the Victoria Park attack has released a statement after 17-year-old Charlie Pearce was found guilty of attempted murder and admitted two counts of rape.

The woman, who cannot be named for legal reasons, said: “Before this horrific incident I was an independent young woman.

"Last July I woke up from a coma not knowing what I had been through. I have no recollection of the state I was in when I was found.

“I have to live knowing what happened to me when I was walking home that evening. I have to live with the violent injuries as well as the physical and psychological impact they have had on me and will continue to have on me.

Detective pays tribute to Victoria Park attack victim

The police officer who led the investigation into the rape and attempted murder of a woman in Victoria Park paid tribute to the victim after her 17-year-old attacker was found guilty of trying to kill her.

Det Ch Insp Rob Widdowson said: "The horror that he brought to this young woman on that summer evening, and the controlled and deliberate attempts to dispose of the evidence, all but defy description.

"Had his victim not been found when she was, and were it not for the skills of the many specialists who treated her, I believe she would have died that night."
