Weather: Yellow warning for ice and snow

There is a yellow warning for ice and snow in Derbyshire overnight as temperatures fall away. This could lead to some slippery and tricky conditions and travel disruption first thing.


It will be a very cold night with lows of -2C (28F) and some frost in the morning.

A frosty and cold start to the day with cloud building through the day. There’s a chance of a few wintry showers through the afternoon. Another cold day with highs of 2C (36F)

Ninth arrest in jeweller murder investigation

Detectives investigating the death of 74-year-old Ramniklal Jogiya have arrested a 21-year-old woman.

She was detained earlier today on suspicion of conspiring to kidnap and murder.

Mr Jogiya was found dead in Gaulby Lane, Stoughton, last month after disappearing from his shop in Belgrave Road, Leicester.

Four men aged 19, 20, 23 and 29 have been charged with the kidnap and robbery of Mr Jogiya and have appeared at Leicester Magistrates’ Court.

A total of nine people have been arrested in connection with Mr Jogiya's death.

Two men, aged 22 and 18, have been released pending further investigations and two arrested men, aged 20 and 21, have been released with no further action.

Attempted murder arrest after stabbing

A 20-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder following a stabbing in Beeston.

Police were called to a property in Turnpike Lane just before 18:00 last night where a 22-year-old was wounded.

He was taken to hospital but his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.

Pair who rejected Dragon's Den deal 'have £2.6m firm'

Two entrepreneurs, who turned down the offer of investment on TV show Dragon's Den, are celebrating their latest sales figures.

Alex Somervell and Jonny Pryn, a University of Nottingham graduate, rejected Peter Jones' offer of £60,000 for a 20% stake of their foreign language books company.

The pair were only willing to give away 7.5% of their business.

Since turning down the offer, the pair claim their company is worth £2.6m.

Assisted by £80,000 investment from the University of Nottingham, the duo also exceeded their 2017 sales targets by 30%.

Trent flooding procedure to be tested

A "major exercise" is taking place this week to test how organisations respond to a large flood along the whole of the River Trent.

The exercise will test the Environment Agency, emergency services, councils, government departments, utility companies, the Met Office and the military exchange information.

Those involved will pretend the area has suffered an intense storm, which caused significant flooding.

We don’t get second chances during a major flooding incident so it is essential that we test our response through exercises like this one, to make sure every organisation can work together to do everything possible for communities when we are faced with the real thing."

Protests against fracking at Marsh Lane

People campaigning against plans for a potential fracking site on the Yorkshire/Derbyshire border have been protesting at a Derbyshire County Council meeting today.

Eckington Against Fracking don't want INEOS to carry out exploratory drilling at a site at Marsh Lane, between Sheffield and Chesterfield; INEOS also want to do something similar at Misson near Doncaster.

The BBC is awaiting a response from INEOS and the final decision on the site will be made by central government and not Derbyshire County Council.

House fire death 'not suspicious'

Police investigating the death of a man in a house fire in Hinckley are treating it as "non-suspicious".

The blaze was at a property on Trinity Lane yesterday morning. A 30-year-old man was rescued but later died.

A woman was arrested in connection with the investigation but she has since been released with no further action.

A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a man at his home in Kettering.

Tairu Jallow, 29, was fatally stabbed at the property in Havelock Street on 14 January.

Clever Makande, 23, of Brandwood Crescent, Kings Norton, Birmingham, was remanded in custody after appearing at Northampton Magistrates' Court on Monday.

He will next appear at Leicester Crown Court on Tuesday.

A 29-year-old man from Birmingham and a 31-year-old man from Nottingham remain in custody on suspicion of murder.

Bird flu identified in Rutland

Nine birds have been found with bird flu in Rutland.

It's the sixth case of avian influenza to be recorded in England this winter prompting Defra to enforce its bird flu prevention zone across the whole country.

The birds infected near Oakham were wild mallards and moorhens.

Rutland County Council is referring those with concerns to the helpline set up by Defra.

Public Health England said the risk to public health from avian influenza is very low.

Nottingham station fire: Woman released after arrest

A 33-year-woman arrested last week on suspicion of starting a major fire at Nottingham railway station has been released while investigations continue, British Transport Police have said.

The blaze, on 12 January, caused widespread disruption and major damage to the building.

The woman was detained in Derby on Friday morning.

Rugby: Tigers players take on Italy for England

England's Six Nations match against Italy yesterday featured some highs and lows for the Leicester Tigers players in the national side.

This was the moment George Ford scored one of England's seven tries.

It wasn't a good start to the competition for Ben Youngs though - the scrum-half left the pitch after just nine minutes of play with a knee injury.

The England head coach, Eddie Jones, has said Youngs will have an examination today but is unlikely to be available for the Wales game next weekend.

M1 lorry fire recovery continues

Two lanes are still closed on the M1 in Leicestershire after a lorry carrying paper caught fire.

It happened between J20-21 at about 08:30.

Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said each one-tonne bale of paper is being removed so they can extinguish the fire away from the motorway and allow the lanes to reopen.

Harrogate attempted murder charge following knife incident

A man's been charged with attempted murder in Harrogate.


It follows a disturbance in the town in the Unity Road area (pictured) last October, in which three people suffered knife wounds.

Another had a substance sprayed into his eyes.

Several people have been arrested and now police have charged a man from Leicester with attempted murder, wounding and assault.

He's due before Harrogate Magistrates today.

Another man, also from Leicester, has previously been charged with the same offences and is currently awaiting trail.
