On the district judge's decision last week to remand them in custody, the Old Bailey judge said today: "She took the view ... the defendants were devoted parents who believed that their son was in mortal danger and, as many parents would, they would stop at nothing to remove him from that danger.

"In those circumstances she concluded that there was a serious risk that they would commit further offences by sending money to their son in the belief that would lead him to safety."

Two perfectly decent people have ended up in custody because of the love of their child.

Judge acknowledges 'desperate' situation of Jihadi Jack's parents

At the Old Bailey, the judge Mr Justice Saunders acknowledged the "desperate" situation the parents of Jack Letts find themselves in and granted them conditional bail.

IVF 'shouldn't be back of queue' for NHS cash, says MP

Wantage MP Ed Vaizey says he feels obliged to go public with his call for more NHS help to families wanting IVF.

But Oxfordshire's Clinical Commissioning Group says it needs to operate within its budget, and allocating more resources for IVF treatment would mean taking money away from other health services it provides.

If you're unable to start a family without medical assistance it can have a hugely detrimental effect on your mental health and family life. I think it's an important medical intervention and it shouldn't be at the back of the queue and somehow seen as less important.
