Back in January, British astronaut Tim Peake sent a message from the International Space Station, asking school children to help him in one of his scientific experiments.

He wanted them to plant rocket seeds that have been in orbit with him. It was all to see if being weightless had any affect on the the way plants grow.

And this afternoon pupils at West Felton Primary have been sowing them, to see if they turn out looking different to ordinary rocket seeds.

Deepcut inquest: Pathologist casts doubt on suicide theories

Andy Giddings

BBC Local Live

A pathologist has cast doubt over claims that Private Cheryl James killed herself at Deepcut Barracks.

The 18-year-old Army recruit, whose family live near Oswestry, was found with a fatal head wound in 1995, and ballistics experts have told her inquest that "soot deposits" could be seen on her face and thumb that are "indicative" of a close or hard contact gunshot wound.

But Professor Derrick Pounder, brought in by Pte James's family to provide an exhumation post-mortem examination on the soldier last year, said dark marks that had been taken for soot were actually either dirt or bruising.

Delay in arrival of Shropshire's first Syrian refugees

There's been a delay in the arrival of the first Syrian refugees in Shropshire.

Three families were expected to be rehoused in Oswestry this month, but the Oswestry Welcomes Syrian Refugees group has been told they will now arrive in the summer.

The reason for the delay hasn't been made clear, but the organisation arranging things, Refugee Action has now appointed three staff to handle the resettlement in the county.

Football: Penalty save keeps Telford clear of relegation zone

BBC Sport

Shrewsbury were left to regret a missed penalty, but a saved penalty for Telford keeps alive their hopes of staying up.

When you look at the table they're in a very similar situation, with two points separating them from the relegation zone, but with two games of the season remaining, they know a win on Saturday could be enough to keep them up.

James Montgomery
Mike Sheridan

Importantly, the 0-0 draw meant Brackley failed to climb above Telford and The Bucks' fate remains in their own hands.

The main thing was not to lose that game of football, that would have been a catastrophe for us. We are coming away the same situation we came in."

Call for greater respect for nursing home staff

The group that represents most of the county's nursing homes and home-help agencies says there needs to be a "seismic change in attitude" towards people who work in social care, to attract more people into the job.

Around 15,000 people work in the care industry in the county and the chairman of Shropshire Partners in Care, David Coull, believes a further 6,000 will be needed in the next decade to look after the growing elderly population.

Care home

Mr Coull says pay needs to improve, because many staff get just above the living wage and they need to be given more thanks for the job they do.

How can we possibly value the seniors of our communities if we don't value the people who provide the essential personal care?"

They're just two points and one place outside from the bottom four and have a tough run-in ahead of them.

Kyle Vassell's miss from the spot after just six minutes could prove costly at the end of the season, but the manager Micky Mellon refused to point the finger at anyone for the defeat.

I'm not going to blame anyone for stepping up. It's a brave thing to do, I've played the game. When you step up and you miss it and you're disappointed, but the boys showed character and they came again."
