House of Lords spat over Sheffield trees

Esther Webber

BBC News, London

There's just been a bit of a ding-dong in the House of Lords over the Sheffield trees issue

Liberal Democrat Paul Scriven has called for communities to be given more power to protect tree-lined streets to prevent what he calls the "chainsaw massacre" in Sheffield.

Meanwhile, Labour's Lord Blunkett called it "extraordinary" for the Liberal Democrats to "demand national legislation to resolve a local dispute".

Labour's local government spokesman Lord Kennedy then said we've all "twigged" why Lord Scriven has asked this question - he's standing for local election next month.

Local government minister Baroness Trafford confirmed the government has no plans to change local planning laws.

She described trees as "incredibly important for the well-being of the environment and the community".
