BreakingRotherham MPs' public inquiry call into Orgreave policing

Sir Kevin Barron MP, Sarah Champion MP & John Healey MP, the three members of Parliament for Rotherham borough have today written to the Home Secretary Theresa May to call for a public inquiry into the policing of the Orgreave picket during the miners’ strike.

Following the verdicts in the Hillsborough inquiry it is clear that justice can take decades to achieve, and we believe now is the time to pursue that for those who were involved in clashes with police at Orgreave. We believe that the incidents that took place at Orgreave and other pits must now be looked at by an independent body."

Homeless shelter in Rotherham at risk from cuts say local MP

It's being claimed government cuts will put hundreds at risk of homelessness in Rotherham. 

This is a warning from two homeless charities in the town who say they may have to close their doors, forcing around 110 vulnerable people back onto the streets, if the Government's housing benefit reforms are implemented. 

Shadow Housing Minister John Healey has visited Rush House and Target Housing today.

A world first?

A heart transplant patient is believed to be the first in the world to have undergone a hysterectomy operation performed using a surgical robot.

Nicola Dixon, of Everton, near Doncaster, had the procedure at the Royal Hallamshire Hospital in Sheffield, performed using the Da Vinci robot. 

There are no other cases recorded in the medical literature of such a procedure ever having been performed on a woman who has previously undergone a heart transplant.

A world record has been broken in Chesterfield today.

The world's largest first aid lesson took place at the ProAct Stadium in Chesterfield. 

1,395 people - most of them children - picked up some life-saving skills. 

They narrowly beat the previous record, which was set in Abu Dhabi three years ago.

After seeing footage of the man he credits with saving his life by pulling him from the crowd and putting him on his shoulders - he put out an appeal to try to find him.

Cricket: England momentum at Headingley

England opening batsman Alex Hales claims that the hosts "have the momentum" after recovering from 83-5 to finish on 298 after their first innings in the first test against Sri Lanka at Headingley.

Chris Turner says he would be firmly against proposals to allow Rangers and Celtic or B sides from Premier League clubs into the new league structure. 

The League has announced plans for a shake up of the divisions from 2019, but would need agreement from 90 percent of clubs to push any plans through.

Sheffield Hallam University unveils new £30m building

Baroness Doreen Lawrence OBE has officially opened Sheffield Hallam University's new £30m Charles Street building. 

The new School of Education building in the heart of Sheffield city centre, which features a concertina-effect walkway, houses more than 150 academic staff and 5,000 students - making it one of the largest providers of education training and research in the UK.

Sheffield's Pennine Foods' staff strike in £5k wage-loss row

Factory workers who claim they would lose £5,000 a year under contract changes have gone on strike.

About 400 staff members at Sheffield's Pennine Foods factory - which makes M&S ready meals - are on the second day of a 48-hour walkout.

They say changes would remove extra weekend pay and lieu days for working weekends and bank holidays.

A man on a bridge prompted calls to the police this morning.

Officers were alerted at around 10.05am to the Stradbroke Road area of Sheffield following reported concerns for the man on a bridge.

A number of roads around the A57 Mosborough Parkway are closed while emergency services respond. 

This includes part of the A57 from Parkway roundabout to Coisley Hill, as well as Stradbroke Road.

Two South Yorkshire MoD drivers are among five lorry drivers injured in a crash involving four military trucks and an HGV.

The collision happened at about 12:00 on the A17 Station Road at Swineshead Bridge near Boston.

Three men were airlifted to hospital with "serious injuries" while a woman and another man were taken by ambulance, Lincolnshire Police said.

The force said the military vehicles were being transported by civilians and not military personnel.

A 56-year-old South Yorkshire man remains critically ill at the Queens Medical centre in Nottingham while a 44-year-old man from the region is being treated at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge for serious injuries.

Police are appealing for witnesses after a collision in Doncaster yesterday evening that left a woman critically injured. 

At about 21:45, it's reported that a silver Toyota Yaris was travelling along Bawtry Road out of Doncaster towards Bawtry when it was involved in a collision with a central kerb and some street furniture.

A 59-year-old woman driving the Yaris has been taken to hospital with life-threatening injuries where she remains this morning.

BreakingSouth Yorkshire MoD drivers seriously injured after five-truck crash

Two Ministry of Defence drivers from South Yorkshire are in hospital after an accident involving four MoD trucks and a lorry in Lincolnshire yesterday lunchtime. 

A 56-year-old man remains critically ill at the Queens Medical centre in Nottingham and a 44-year-old man is being treated at Addenbrookes hospital in Cambridge for serious injuries following the accident near Boston. 

The driver of the lorry, a 23 year-old man, is also being treated in hospital.

Barnsley fans look forward to another trip to Wembley

A fantastic result for Barnsley last night who've made it to the League One play-off finals after beating Walsall last night

The Reds went into the second leg of the semi-finals 3-0 up and it ended 6-1 on aggregate to Barnsley.

It'll be their second Wembley trip this season. They won the JP trophy there last month. 

These fans are delighted!

Ann Duckenfield: Hillsborough is 'terrible for us too'

The wife of the match commander on the day of the Hillsborough disaster has said that she and her husband are also going through a "terrible" ordeal. 

Although former chief superintendent David Duckenfield declined to make a comment following the conclusion of the inquests, his wife Ann told a reporter how their lives have been affected. 

Mrs Duckenfield accompanied her husband to the inquests held in Warrington as he gave evidence, before the jury concluded that the 96 Liverpool fans had been unlawfully killed.

Barnsley Hospital security staff to wear video cameras

Now, here's a first for South Yorkshire.

Barnsley Hospital is planning to tighten up security by way of people wearing video cameras. 

They'll be worn by security patrol staff and the idea is to tackle violent and anti-social behaviour.

After yesterday's walkout, more strike action is planned at the Business, Innovation and Skills Office in Sheffield. 

There's also anger over Business Secretary not talking to the council over 250 jobs going in the city.

The Government Minister was in Sheffield last night, but says his schedule was too tight as he was a key note speaker at the Cutlers' Feast.

Workers at Sheffield's Pennine Foods are now into their second day of strike action.

It's over changes to their contracts which they say will cost them as much as £5,000 or £6,000 a year.

They say these changes will remove extra weekend pay and lieu days for working weekends and bank holidays. 

Yesterday over a hundred workers picketed outside the company's headquarters near Crystal Peaks, turning away trucks trying to make deliveries.

A spokesman for Pennine Foods said: "We are disappointed some colleagues have decided on industrial action, given the union leadership’s acceptance of our new terms in February.

"We will be holding more talks to avert any further action, and have contingency plans in place to ensure production remains unaffected."

Barnsley made it at Wembley in the League One play-off final with a comfortable play-off second-leg win at Walsall.

Adam Hammill's early close-range strike for the visitors was followed by Ashley Fletcher's second-half effort.

Walsall's Jordan Cook curled in a late right-foot reply from outside the box but Josh Brownhill pounced on an error to complete a 6-1 aggregate victory. Relive the game as it happened here. 

The Tykes will now face either Millwall or Bradford in the final on 29 May, in their second outing to Wembley in a year.
