Events marking the 100th anniversary of the Battle of the Somme have dominated today.
The extent of the loss of life, the brutality and the misery have echoed through memorial events.
They resonated too through the head-turning scenes in Sheffield and Doncaster in which people in groups wore army uniform to recreate the time when men left to take part in the battle. So many didn't return.
This photograph is of just a few of them. There were 60,000 casualties on the the first day of the battle - enough to fill the Keepmoat Stadium four times over.
