Yorkshire dominates Team GB diving team

Swim England has announced that nine athletes who either live or train in Yorkshire will be part of the Team England diving squad for the 2018 Commonwealth Games in Australia.

They are:

  • Alicia Blagg - City of Leeds Diving Club
  • Chris Mears - City of Leeds Diving Club
  • Daniel Goodfellow - City of Leeds Diving Club

  • Katherine Torrance - City of Leeds Diving Club
  • Lois Toulson - City of Leeds Diving Club
  • Matty Lee - City of Leeds Diving Club

As well as this, five of the coaching staff for the games are also from the White Rose county.

The squad was finalised after January's British Diving Championships in Plymouth and the games take place on Australia's Gold Coast beginning on 4 April and are live across the BBC.

Police appeal over South Yorkshire crash

South Yorkshire Police are appealing for witnesses to a serious collision in Marr at the weekend.

The crash happened at around 21:30 on Saturday evening on Barnsley Road, when a silver and grey car collided with a wall.

The 20-year-old driver suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital.

It's understood the vehicle was heading in the direction of Doncaster and the A1(M).

Officers want to hear from any witnesses - in particular the driver of a white van who is understood to have been travelling through the area at the time of the crash.

Two lanes were shut when a lorry and car collided earlier this morning but traffic has now returned to normal on that stretch and on nearby surrounding routes.

The reality TV show saw nine members of the public trying to stay on the run for 25 days and avoid capture by a team of experts.

Accident closes two lanes on M1 near Sheffield

An accident has closed two lanes on the northbound side of the M1 just after junction 34 at Meadowhall.

The inside two lanes of four have been shut while the emergency services deal with the incident which involves a car and a lorry.

As you can see below, traffic is queuing on the main carriageway and also on the entry slip road joining the motorway near the Tinsley viaduct:

Looking at speed sensors, surrounding routes are also busy as motorists try to divert onto alternative routes.

It's expected to be at least an hour until traffic has returned to normal in that part of South Yorkshire.

Man faces attempted murder charges over arson attack

A man from Doncaster is due to appear in court later charged with three counts of attempted murder after an arson attack in Leeds.

Anthony Walters, 33, of Beckett Road, Wheatley Park, in Doncaster, is due to appear at Leeds Magistrates' Court in relation to the fire at a house in Hill Top Mount in Harehills, on 24 January.

A mother and her two children had to be rescued from the property by firefighters.

The first new electric trains destined for the north of England are now under construction.

They're being built in Spain and will replace outdated "Pacer" trains.

Northern says it plans to introduce nearly 100 by early 2020 and refurbish the rest of their fleet.

The firm says the new trains will have air conditioning, reservable seats and free wifi.

Tony Miles, from Modern Railways magazine, tells me the trains are "far better than those arriving in the south" and will have plenty of room for legs:

One crime victim says he's afraid to use his own front door after his car was trashed and he was threatened:

South Yorkshire Police say they're aware of concerns about anti-social behaviour and officers are "taking action to tackle it".

They say this includes "working with the council to secure Criminal Behaviour Orders against individuals, and working with young people who may be drawn into anti-social behaviour and crime".

CCTV appeal after machete robbery in Sheffield

Detectives have released CCTV footage of two men they want to speak to in connection with an armed robbery in Sheffield.

On Friday, staff at The Kiosk shop in Frecheville were threatened by two men - one of whom was believed to be armed with a machete.

The pair fled the store with a quantity of cash, cigarettes and alcohol. No-one was injured during the incident.

South Yorkshire Police is asking anyone with information to contact them.

Sheffield has this week been named as a Social Enterprise City, which means it's been recognised as a hotspot for the activity along with 23 other places including Auckland in New Zealand and Veneto in Italy.

Crackdown targets Sheffield off-road bikers

Vehicles have been seized and warnings issued in Sheffield after a police crackdown on off-road bikes.

During patrols on popular trails in Thorpe Hesley, police officers found several burned-out vehicles and issued seven warnings to groups of bikers.

Officers say anti-social behaviour linked to off-road and quad bikes is one of their priorities.

They've seized 31 motorbikes in Sheffield in recent months.

These bikes are a danger to others. They damage the environment and reduce the enjoyment of people accessing the areas for legitimate means."

Sheffield man arrested on suspicion of attempted murder

A man from Sheffield has been arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and firearms offences.

Officers carried out three warrants in the Greenhill, Westfield and Gleadless areas earlier, following an incident on Tuesday 16 January when it was reported that shots were fired at Jiggas takeaway on Cricket Inn Road.

The 24-year-old, from the Greenhill area of Sheffield, was also arrested following an incident in the Wybourne area on Monday.

He has been released on bail while enquiries continue.

A woman has denied murdering a 72-year-old man who was found dead at his home in Doncaster on Boxing Day.

A post-mortem examination revealed Mr Eaton (pictured) had been repeatedly stabbed and beaten.

Lindsey Fletcher, 38, pleaded not guilty to murder at Sheffield Crown Court.

She has been remanded in custody ahead of a trial set for 11 June.
