BBC News England

One of Britain's most illustrious brewers, who has a close connection to Burton, has been called "probably the greatest brewer" the country has had.

It comes as a plaque's been unveiled to celebrate the 300th birthday of William Bass who founded the Bass Brewery in the town, aged 60.

The company became famous across the world for its beer and its red triangle symbol was the UK's first trademark.

Richard Lewin, who helped organise the honour in his birthplace of Hinckley, said the firm still has "global significance" thanks to its founder.

Yesterday, the all-star show was held to remember the victims and turned into a night of unity, healing and joy for 50,000 music fans.

14-year-old Zinni told BBC WM it was a difficult, emotional night for her.

It was really reassuring seeing how many police there were around. I wanted to go because I wanted to go and support everyone who was there and Ariana [Grande] but at the same time I was very nervous to go back considering the Manchester concert was my first concert to go to."

One Love Manchester: Robbie Williams praised for 'powerful moment'

Ian Youngs

Entertainment and Arts Reporter, BBC News

The performance by Stoke-on-Trent singer Robbie Williams at the One Love Manchester concert's been hailed as one of the event's most powerful moments.

There were high emotions at the benefit concert staged by Ariana Grande in Manchester less than two weeks after the terror attack following her gig in the city.

In his performance, with a few tweaks to the chorus, Robbie turned a minor 1998 hit into a rousing song to rally the masses.

Everyone in the crowd could easily bellow the simple chorus, and Robbie bellowed it in between songs too.

It even overshadowed his classic Angels as his main sing-a-long moment.

He won praise on Twitter with Adam Pitts tweeting: "Amazing @robbiewilliams doing us proud #OneLoveManchester".

And Jack Mull added: "I've got goosebumps listening to Robbie Williams and the crowd singing "Manchester we're strong".

"I saw the knife and I didn't turn around again. I just started running as fast as I could," she said.

The 19-year-old from Cheshire saw the attacker behind her and ran into Applebee's pub where she joined 30 or 40 others and hid in a stock room.

She said she owes the taxi driver her life and appealed for him to get in touch: "You saved my life and you let me go and make sure other people were safe."

Football: Crewe defender wants new signings to improve his game

Graham McGarry

Crewe Alexandra commentator, BBC Radio Stoke

Crewe Alexandra's defender Perry Ng's told BBC Radio Stoke he thinks new signings that the club make this summer will bring out the best in him.

Striker Chris Porter agreed a deal with the club earlier this week, following Michael Raynes and Jordan Bowery signed last month.

Ng himself signed a new deal last month.

Sometimes, if they come in in my position, it's a bit of competition for me but it's also nice meeting new people and making new friends. Last year, they brought a few people in and that really raised the group and got us all together so hopefully we can do the same this year."

New rules on drivers using phones 'not having desired impact'

Lucy King

Police in Staffordshire say harsher penalties, brought in to punish people using their phone while driving, haven't had the desired impact.

Nearly 700 people have been caught in Staffordshire and Cheshire since 1 March, despite punishments being increased to a £200 fine and six penalty points.

Staffordshire Police says there's been no great reduction in the number of people their officers are catching despite the tougher rules.

We're still seeing plenty of cases, I see them on-duty and off-duty, we still get reports from members of the public and we're still seeing a similar level of prosecutions to before the legislation change."

Doctor who treated bomb victims feared second attack

Liz Ellis

Presenter, BBC Radio Stoke

A doctor from Staffordshire who treated victims of the Manchester bombing says he thought he might not come back alive after being called to the attack.

Dr Richard Smith works at the Royal Stoke University Hospital's Trauma Centre but also volunteers as a first responder.

The 22 May attack at the Manchester Arena killed 22 people and left dozens seriously hurt.

Dr Smith says he treated people as young as 10 who'd been hurt, but was concerned there could have been another bomb.

I did feel worried, there was that concern that, in the initial stages of that attack, information is very sketchy, it's a very confused picture which emerges and it's unclear whether there might be something else to come and I did worry that this might be an incident I wouldn't come back from."
