Mother dies after car hits family

The mother of three young boys has died after being hit by a car on the pavement on Battle High Street. She was pushing her baby son in a pram when a car mounted the pavement, crushing her against the front of a café.  

Her husband and children have now all been released from hospital.

Brawl at Varsity university rugby match to be investigated

A brawl that broke out among spectators at a university sports event is under investigation by police.

Bottles were thrown at the crowd and security staff during the Varsity rugby event between the universities of Brighton and Sussex.

Varsity fight: A full investigation has been launched

The two universities involved in the large fight which broke out yesterday at a varsity rugby match at Falmer have issued a joint statement. 

"The scenes witnessed at the annual varsity sports day were shocking and disgraceful. A full investigation has been launched into events and any students identified as having participated in the disorder will face serious consequences under our codes of discipline. We unreservedly condemn the behaviour. The future of fixtures will be under review as part of our wider investigation."

Does Brighton's i360 deserve an architecture award?

Fourteen buildings, including the i360 viewing tower in Brighton, have been shortlisted for the Royal Institute of British Architects South East awards 2017.

Other buildings nominated across the South East include Kingsdown House in The King's School in Canterbury, Command of the Oceans at Chatham's Historic Dockyard, Hastings Pier and Brighton College.

The awards ceremony takes place on Thursday 25 May.

Thousands of people took part in the Hastings Half Marathon

It was the 33rd Hastings Half Marathon yesterday. 

Ben Fish battled the windy conditions to cross the line first.

It was the second victory for the man nicknamed 'the Blackburn Flyer'.  

Police called to fight at university

Sussex Police were called to a report of a large fight that had broken out among spectators at a varsity rugby match at Falmer yesterday. 

There were reports of bottles being thrown at the match between Sussex and Brighton universities and a number of people being injured. 

Police say they are examining CCTV footage of the incident and want to speak to anyone who was injured or who may have witnessed what happened.

Mother-of-three dies after crash in Battle

A 37-year-old mother of three has died in hospital after a car crashed into her and her family in Battle yesterday afternoon (19 March).  

She had been with her partner and three children at the time.

Police say her partner suffered serious head injuries.

The driver and the three children, including an infant in a pram, sustained shock and minor injuries and were treated at the Conquest Hospital in St Leonards.

Sergeant Peter Verney, of the Sussex Police roads policing unit, said: "Our thoughts are very much with the family at what is a very difficult time, and we would ask people to respect their privacy while they try to come to terms with what has happened."  

Police are appealing for witnesses.

There really will be bluebirds over the White Cliffs of Dover today as part of celebrations to mark Dame Vera Lynn`s 100th birthday. 

The 50ft birds will be serenaded by military re-enactors as the Forces' Sweetheart is honoured for her wartime service.

The singer is best known for her 1939 hit "We'll Meet Again", which was hugely popular with troops overseas and their families back home during World War Two. 

These days she's a well known figure in her hometown of Ditchling.

A day of celebration is being held to mark the 100th birthday of Dame Vera Lynn. 

The singer, songwriter and actress, who lives in Ditchling, became hugely popular during World War Two and was widely referred to as "The Forces' Sweetheart".

A 350ft image of Dame Vera is being projected onto the White Cliffs of Dover.

The singer said she was thrilled by the tributes and would be thinking of all those servicemen who'd glanced back at the cliffs as they headed off to war.

The Brighton Half Marathon's being investigated over claims it's been 500ft short for the last three years.

I tried to keep up with these runners in Brighton on Friday to find out what they think.

Parents of three children seriously injured after being hit by car

The parents of three children have been seriously injured after a car crashed into them while they were out walking.

The family, including an infant in a pram, were walking along Upper Lake in Battle when they were struck by a black Volkswagen Beetle yesterday afternoon.

The car crashed in to a cafe window, trapping customers inside.

Police and paramedics found the mother with "potentially life-threatening" injuries and the father with a serious head injury.

Both were taken to the Royal Sussex County Hospital in Brighton.

The children suffered shock and minor injuries, as did the woman driver of the car. 

Police are appealing for witnesses.
