John Surtees was famously the only man to win world championships on both two wheels and four.

He went onto run a successful motor racing business in Edenbridge and bought the Buckmore Park karting circuit in Chatham.

He died in March but this evening sporting legends and TV celebrities are paying tribute to his extraordinary life at a Motorsport Hall of Fame event in Epsom.

Mark Coleman, who's 23, was released early from a four-year term for attempted robbery.

It's inspired by the experiences of WW1 conscientious objectors, some of whom were interned in a nearby camp.

Albion midfielder signs new one-year deal

Brighton and Hove Albion midfielder Steve Sidwell has penned a new one-year deal with the club.

The 34-year-old joined Albion for a second spell in January 2016, initially signing on loan from Stoke City.

He made the move permanent last summer, and was a key part of the club's promotion-winning Championship side last season.

Manager Chris Hughton said: "Steve has been a key member of the squad over the past 18 months. He thoroughly deserves this new deal and I am delighted that he is extending his stay at the club.

"Our fans know his qualities well, and his experience, particularly at Premier League level, will be important for us. He is an excellent pro and that experience will be vital for us next season."

Bodger and Badger creator Andy Cunningham dies after cancer battle

Bodget and Badger star Andy Cunningham

Entertainer Andy Cunningham, best known as the creator and star of children's TV show Bodger And Badger, has died aged 67.

Cunningham played handyman Simon Bodger in the series and voiced his companion, a beret-wearing talking badger with a love for mashed potatoes.

He died of cancer at the Royal Sussex County Hospital on Monday.

The show ran on the BBC from 1989 to 1999.

His sister Tessa Cunningham said: "Andy lived to be loved and to make people laugh - starting with me, his little sister.

"He had a quicksilver brain, a rebellious attitude, boundless compassion particularly for the underdog, unstinting levels of generosity and, of course, a passion for mashed potato."

Armed officers deployed at Sussex festival

Armed police officers are being deployed to this weekend's Wildlife music festival at Shoreham airport in the wake of the recent terror attacks.

More than 20,000 people are expected on each of the two days, 9 and 10 June.

They're being asked to avoid bringing bags to the event to help speed up access.

Sussex Police says security around the site has also been stepped up.

Joe makes a winning start

Sussex's Joe Marler's made his first appearance for the British and Irish Lions on their tour of New Zealand, as the tourists came from behind to beat the Provincial Barbarians 13-7.

He's on the bench for the second match, against the Blues, which kicks off at 08:35 BST today.

Eight All Blacks are in the Blues' starting XV, and the first test against the mighty New Zealand is on 24 June.

Man badly injured in unprovoked attack

A man's suffered a broken arm after being attacked by a gang in Peacehaven.

The 27-year-old was walking home from a shop in South Coast Road, between 22:10 and 22:20 BST on 3 June, when he was approached by a group of four or five other men, who pushed him over.

The attackers were aged between 16 and 20.

This was a completely unprovoked assault on a local man as he walked home. The incident took place on a busy main road and I urge anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.'

Road safety campaign launched

A task force has been launched by Sussex Police to improve safety and reduce the number of road deaths.

Officers from the force will lead Operation Crackdown's strike team - checking motorists for drink and drug driving.

Last year 55 people were killed in collisions on the county's roads.

Beach litter campaign launched

Visitors to one of the South East's most popular beaches are being urged to do their part to keep it clean.

Over last month's bank holiday weekend, 42 tonnes of rubbish was collected from Brighton beach and the seafront bins.

A council team has joined a special campaign which encourages visitors to spend two minutes picking up litter before heading home.
