UKIP conference
BBC

It’s been a difficult year for UKIP. Here in Torquay today there’s a chance its future could be lead by a man from Kent.

Henry Bolton stood for the party in the Police and Crime Commissioner elections last year and came second. In this race he says he is “quietly confident”.

Along with him there are six other candidates. The bookies favourites are Anne Marie Waters and the party’s current deputy leader Peter Whittle. Anne Marie Waters is a name you might have heard of. She’s a controversial figure who has called Islam a "threat".

Within the party there has been talk of resignations and the end of the party as we know it if she wins. One Kent UKIP councillor told me the party would “haemorrhage" members if Anne Marie Waters was elected and Nigel Farage is reportedly setting up his own party if she does win.

It seems this is an election that will decide which road the party will follow. One with a focus on anti-Islam veering to the far right or one with a focus on Brexit.

Kent has UKIP’s only controlled council, Thanet District Council, which the party lost overall control of just a few weeks ago. After the result is announced today some have told me they’ll be thinking hard about their future in the party depending on which direction it goes.

Crowdfunding bid to save seafront terraces raises more than £185,000

Madeira Terraces
BBC

A crowdfunding campaign launched in July to kick-start the repair and regeneration of a section of crumbling Victorian seafront arches in Brighton has raised more than 40% of the money required.

The entire Grade II listed cast iron structure that forms Madeira Terraces on the seafront is closed to the public over fears parts could collapse.

More than £185,000 of the £430,000 needed to renovate the first three of its 151 arches has so far been raised, with the aim of reaching the target by the end of November.

Once completed, pop up businesses will be installed in each of them and used as an illustration to attract the remaining £23.5m estimated to complete the project.

We're delighted with the public response to the campaign and thank everyone who has given their time or money to help keep the pledges coming in.

Madeira Terrace is an integral part of our seafront history and we are doing our utmost to ensure it remains a key part of the city landscape into the future.
