Cruise ship brings tourists to the region

A cruise ship carrying 2,400 passengers visited the Port of Tyne today.

The Norwegian Jade has stopped in the region to allow travellers from 45 different nations to explore the North East.

The tourists will get to see Newcastle City Centre, Durham Cathedral and Beamish museum amongst other attractions.

Woman shot in Middlesbrough park

A 61-year-old woman was shot with a suspected air rifle in Middlesbrough.

The incident took place on Tuesday at about 14:30 in Albert Park when the victim was walking near to the Park Road South entrance.

She was shot in the right leg and suffered bruising.

Police believe the driver of a grey Land Rover may have witnessed the incident and would like them to come forward.

Family of sex attack victim 'thankful' for sentence

The family of a woman attacked in Middlesbrough by a man who fled to Romania says the crime "destroyed" the victim's life.

In a statement, the 51-year-old's family said they are "thankful" Cezar Florea, 29, has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

They added: "We would like to express our deepest gratitude to Cleveland Police... for the tremendous effort they put in to convicting Cezar Florea.

"The way they have treated our family has been above and beyond what would be expected."

Man charged with murder of Guisborough teenager remanded in custody

A man charged with the murder of a 17-year-old motorcyclist has been remanded in custody after appearing in court today.

Philip Buckworth, 34, of Park Lane, Guisborough, will appear at Teesside Crown Court on Monday.

The victim, Sonny Stephenson, died in a crash just after 21:15 on Bolckow Street in Guisborough on Sunday.

Man who fled after sex attack jailed

A man who fled to Romania after carrying out a violent sexual attack on Teesside has been sentenced to 16 years in prison.

Cezar Florea, 29, attacked a 51-year-old woman in the North Ormsby area of Middlesbrough as she walked to work early in the morning.

She suffered a broken shoulder and nose in the attack.

Andy Carroll watch thief convicted

A serial thief has been convicted of attempting to rob Premier League striker Andy Carroll's £22,000 watch in a drive-by raid.

Jack O'Brien, 22, swooped on the England player's Jeep Wrangler near Hainault, north-east London, as he was driving home last year.

Mr Carroll, from Gateshead, told the trial he believed O'Brien had a gun when he pulled alongside him at a set of traffic lights and demanded the watch on 2 November.

The 28-year-old was then pursued by two suspects on motorbikes as he tried to escape, forcing him on to the wrong side of the road as he drove back to his training ground, which had security staff.

Krul joins Brighton on loan

Newcastle United goalkeeper Tim Krul has joined fellow Premier League side Brighton on a season-long loan.

Krul will be re-united with former Newcastle manager Chris Hughton, who described the 29-year-old Dutchman as "an excellent professional" with "vast experience".

Krul joined Ajax on loan last season, before switching to fellow Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in January.

He made 16 appearances with Alkmaar and helped them to a sixth-placed finish in the Eredivisie.

Northern Rail have says it plans to run 900 services across the region as some staff go on strike.

The company is warning of delays and changes to schedules though and is advising people to check its website for timetables.
