Two men arrested over alleged abduction and dumping of man in East Kilbride

A 34-year-old was badly injured during the incident in which he was chased, assaulted and forced into a car.

Police said the victim was attacked in Stewartfield Grove, East Kilbride, before he was driven 27 miles and dumped in Slamannan, near Falkirk.

A spokesman for Police Scotland said two men, aged 26 and 21, have been reported to the procurator fiscal.

The victim was treated in hospital for injuries to his head, hands and feet following the incident.


It follows the discovery of a 34-year-old man in Stewartfield Grove in East Kilbride on 13 March last year.

Police said at the time he had been taken from his home in Barnsley, shot in the legs and dumped in Scotland, more than 250 miles from his home.

Edinburgh schools: Arrangements announced so all children can resume education

Most first, second and third year students will be back at school on Tuesday.

The arrangements vary for each school.

Some children will be taught in temporary classrooms, some in other schools and some in Napier University's buildings.

However some students who normally go to Craigmount High won't resume their education until Wednesday - a day later than originally hoped.

Full details of the arrangements are being posted on Edinburgh Council's website.

UPDATE: Young boy gives evidence in Liam Fee murder trial

The child, who can't be named, was asked questions about the day two-year old Liam died - March 22nd 2014.

He was asked what he did that was bad. The boy responded "I strangled Liam."

He was later asked how he did it and the boy raised one hand to his mouth.

He was then asked what happened when he took his hand away. 

The child went on to say that Liam was sitting up and looking around at the television.

Warnings of snow and ice issued as wintry weather forecast to return to many parts of Scotland

Arctic blasts are predicted to bring falling temperatures and snow showers on Friday evening and are expected to last until Saturday morning.

The Met Office has issued yellow be aware weather warnings for snow and ice for the Highlands and Islands and Central, Tayside and Fife.

The warnings will last until 08:00 on Saturday when temperatures are predicted to rise.

The jury at the High Court in Livingston was played a pre-recorded video of the child talking to a police woman and social worker filmed two days after two -year-old Liam died.

The boy being questioned is the one Rachel and Nyomi Fee are accused of falsely blaming for the boys death.

Three Scots swimmers qualify for UK final in pursuit of Olympic places

Ross Murdoch, Michael Jamieson and Craig Benson all qualified for the 200m breaststroke final at the most recent heats in Glasgow.

They will go up against Adam Peaty, who is the world record holder over 50m and 100m, in their bid for a place at Rio in August.

Andrew Willis was the fastest with his time of 2:10:47.

Commonwealth gold winner Ross Murdoch has his sights set on a place at this year's Olympic Games.

Murdoch, who won gold at the Commonwealth Games in 2014,  won his heat in 2:11.06, the second quickest time.

Olympic silver medal winners Benson and Jamieson recorded the fourth and fifth best times, with Peaty ahead of them.

Johar Mirza, who is 35, is wanted in the US over claims he took part in a £1m mortgage scam whilst living there.

But Mirza - who is also known as Jacob - claimed he would be unable to go to the States because he is a Pakistani citizen and Jewish.

He told the Scottish authorities that if he was convicted of mortgage fraud, the American authorities would eventually deport him to Pakistan, where, he said, his life would be in danger because of his religious beliefs.

Mirza was jailed for three years at Glasgow Sheriff Court in November 2014 for attempted rape.

The Court of Appeal in Edinburgh on Friday heard that a decision made by Sheriff Thomas Welsh that it was legal for Mirza to be extradited to America was valid.

Trial of two women accused of killing toddler Liam Fee hears from young boy

The boy has been giving evidence in the trial of two women accused of killing two-year-old Liam Fee in Fife.

In a pre recorded video, the boy, who cannot be named for legal reasons, says he was with Nyomi and Rachel Fee, Liam and another boy on the day the toddler died.

The video was recorded two days after Liam died in March 2014.

Head coach Gregor Townsend insists he'll remain at Glasgow Warriors next season

Police name driver killed in three-vehicle crash involving unmarked police car

Dean Meiklejohn, who was 26 and from Thurso, was killed after his Ford Fiesta collided with two other cars, including a Nissan Qashqai being driven by an off-duty police officer, on the A9 last night.

The road was closed for nine hours to allow accident investigators to examine the scene.

Sgt Donnie MacKinnon said: "Tragically this collision has resulted in the driver of the Fiesta sustaining fatal injuries and we are currently trying to establish the full circumstances surrounding this incident.

"Our sincere condolences are with the family and all left devastated by this tragic incident."

Mr MacKinnon urged anyone with information to come forward.

Scottish Liberal Democrats propose to raise income tax by 1p to 'transform' education

Manifesto launch update

The plans were included in their manifesto for this year's Holyrood elections, which was unveiled by party leader Willie Rennie at a soft play centre in Edinburgh.

The party say the move would raise about £500m, which could be spent improving the education system.

The Lib Dems also proposed an expansion in free nursery provision, and vowed to protect council education budgets and reverse cuts to Scottish colleges.


They also said they would improve the way mental health issues are approached in Scotland, with investment in more staff and easier access to services.

The Scottish ConservativesScottish Greens and UKIP have already launched their manifestos, with those from the SNP and Scottish Labour still to come.

Train conductors working for Scotrail are balloted for industrial action

The RMT union said it had failed to secure assurances that the company wasn't planning to increase the number of trains on which doors are operated by the driver.


The union claims it represents a safety threat to passengers and undermines the conductors' terms and conditions.

Scotrail said it was keen to work with the union to find a constructive way forward.

Mother thanks 'hero' taxi driver who picked up son being pursued by 'neds'

Lynn Black Bell said the driver for Airdrie Taxis in North Lanarkshire spotted her son, reportedly aged 19, getting abuse as he walked home in the town so stopped his car and told him to jump in.

She said in a Facebook message to the firm: "He never even took the fare. Please pass this on so he knows how much we appreciate his actions. He's an angel."

Her thanks have been shared on Facebook more than 12,000 times, with hundreds of people paying credit to the driver, understood to be a Billy Gilchrist.

Ms Black Bell said her son got abuse on the train to Airdrie from two youths who started following him home on Tuesday night.

She wrote: "One of your taxi drivers swerved his car across the road to stop the guys from jumping him. He had obviously been watching them.

"The ned guys still followed him home, throwing stuff and shouting they were going to stab him.

"The same taxi guy came round the corner, stopped his taxi and said get in and took him home. He is my actual hero."

Family of man whose body was found in Amsterdam canal raise cash for sick kids

Chris Nelson, 24, from Midlothian, went missing after going for a walk in Amsterdam, where he was visiting a friend, on the morning of 15 November last year.

His body was found by divers in December.

Mr Nelson's family began collecting donations at his funeral and have now raised £2,500 for the Sick Kids Friends Foundation through fundraising events.

His mother Donna said they had chosen the charity because of the time Chris spent at hospital as a child after suffering various sporting injuries.

Man jailed for nine years for 'heinous crimes' against woman and two children

Alan Lindsay, who is 47 and from Edinburgh, was convicted of rape, lewd and libidinous practices and assault in the Edinburgh and Livingston areas between 1989 and 2005.

Speaking after the sentence was handed down at the High Court in Aberdeen, Det Sgt Keith Mailer said: "I want to pay tribute to the victims who have shown absolute courage throughout the investigation and trial.

“Lindsay has been convicted of these heinous crimes and I hope this brings some sense of closure for them."

Woman who died after being hit by car formally identified by police

A woman who died after being hit by a car outside a property on Tuesday has now been formally named by police.

Kim Clark, 46, was killed near to an address in South Street in Milnathort, Perthshire. 


It has been widely reported that the car was driven by her husband.

A police statement described the incident as a '"sudden death" and said a report would be sent to the Procurator Fiscal.
