Wintry showers

Wintry showers will continue to feed in from the west of Dumfries and Galloway this evening and overnight, falling as a sleety mix on the coast but snow inland.

There'll be a widespread risk of ice - the Met Office has issued a yellow "be aware" warning for snow and ice across the south-west tonight and tomorrow morning.

It'll be dry and clear during the first part of the night in the Borders, with a widespread risk of ice.

Through the early hours, a band of rain, sleet and snow will feed in, becoming persistent towards morning, particularly towards Eyemouth and Duns.

Temperatures will dip as low as minus 4 Celsius.

Schools latest

All 80 schools shut by the snow in Dumfries and Galloway today are currently listed as scheduled to reopen tomorrow morning.

He says: "I couldn't get to work this morning as I have a motorcycle, it doesn't usually snow in Dumfries.

"I ended getting a lift this morning. Last night wasn't fun trying to get home, I was caught out."

Helicopter rescues child

A Royal Navy helicopter has

helped to rescue a one-year-old child who took ill while stranded by snow at a house in the Borders.

The alarm was raised by the family at a remote farmhouse at Whisgills near Newcastleton.

A local ambulance became stuck in wintry conditions en route to the child who was described as "unresponsive".

Glasgow's air ambulance could not fly due to heavy snow showers but the Royal Navy airlifted the boy to hospital.

Four charged

Four men have been charged following an assault and robbery at a property in Galashiels.

A 24-year-old man was threatened with a knife before being robbed of various personal items during the incident, which happened at an address in Larchbank Street in the very early hours of Tuesday.

The men, aged between 17 and 27, will appear in court at a later date.

Ross County boss Jim McIntyre has confirmed a bid to sign Ian McShane from Queen of the South has been turned down.

"We have made a bid and Queens have said no and that is where it is at," he said.

Social work services are liaising with all adult care managers and ensuring appropriate arrangements are in place to deliver services to known vulnerable people.

All area offices are staffed. Home-care agencies are sharing information about 4x4 availability where necessary.

The family of missing teenager Macaulay McQueen has been informed of the

discovery of a body on Glencaple beach.

Drugs charge

A man has been charged after Police Scotland recovered a quantity of class A drugs from a property in Galashiels.


Officers discovered diamorphine worth about £1,600 and a three figure sum of cash during a search of a building in Beech Avenue.

A 28-year-old man is expected to appear in court at a later date in connection with the discovery.

Ch Insp Andrew McLean said: "As a result of an intelligence-led search at an address in Beech Avenue, officers recovered a sizeable quantity of the harmful drug before they could it was distributed within the local community."

Farm theft scam

Police have received another report from a farmer near Jedburgh of an unsolicited phone call from a man claiming to be from Police Scotland selling advertising in a publication as part of a local initiative regarding thefts from farms.

Police stressed this was not their initiative and their advice was not to engage with any type of cold caller.

Body found at Glencaple

A body has been recovered from the beach near Glencaple, according to police in Dumfries and Galloway.


The man's body was found by a member of a public at about 10:30 today and reported to the police.

A spokesman said no formal identification has been made and enquiries are ongoing.

Fire victim identified

Police have named the 89-year-old woman who died

in a house fire in Dumfries and Galloway as Mona Stephenson.

A missing woman was airlifted to hospital after she was

found unconscious in blizzard conditions in the Scottish Borders.

The woman was traced about 10 metres from a forest track near Innerleithen by a new search and rescue dog used by Tweed Valley Mountain Rescue Team.

The A701 Dumfries-Moffat road, two miles south of St Ann's Bridge, has been closed in both directions for about 45 minutes, according to local police.

One person has been taken to hospital by ambulance but it is not thought to be serious.
