Fallon: Government 'stepping up' search for shale gas

17 December 2013 Last updated at 20:55 GMT

Energy Minister Michael Fallon has told the BBC that the government is stepping up the search for shale gas.

Mr Fallon said: "Companies that want to search for shale can do so... and see whether it has the same potential here as it's had in the United States."

His comments come as a government-commissioned report revealed that more than half of the UK could be suitable for shale gas fracking.
