Guernsey's retailers need to focus on competition from the internet rather than their neighbours to boost trade.
That is the response of Mel Jeffries, from the retail subgroup of Guernsey's Chamber of Commerce, to the suggestion UK chains could help boost high street footfall.
She said UK stores in St Peter Port can be a "mixed blessing".
It can be really hard for our small independents when a recognised name opens up. Because it's obviously extra competition. But by and large our competition now is not the shops standing side by side us on the high street, it's the internet."
A designer who has created shoes for celebrities including Kylie Minogue and Boy George has told how she sees her business as an art form. Emily Jupp, who is known by her Norwich-based brand-name Milly J, is up for the Nat West High Street Entrpreneur of the Year award.
