Audio slideshow: The first papal visit

The weeks leading up to Pope John Paul II's historic tour of England, Scotland and Wales in 1982 saw Argentina's invasion of the Falkland Islands, and the despatch by Britain of a military taskforce to the South Atlantic.

The war - with a Roman Catholic country - meant that the trip was very nearly cancelled.

As preparations are made for a new papal visit by Benedict XVI in September, reporter Chris Ledgard - for BBC Radio 4 - looks back to the sights and sounds of late May and early June 1982.
