The way we were in 1981: Politics

Conservative Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher had been in office for two years in 1981, introducing policies to push privatisation of state-owned industries and utilities and the reform of the trade unions. There were jobless marches and inner city riots in London, Liverpool, Leeds and Birmingham. It was also the year four Labour defectors, nicknamed the Gang of Four, set up the SDP and formed an alliance with the Liberals.
