Briton arrested over sexual abuse in Bangladesh

A Briton has been arrested in Bangladesh over the alleged sexual abuse of an 11-year-old boy.

Police say Peter Allison, 56, from Bow, east London, was held on 7 September at a hotel in the north-eastern city of Sylhet.

Mr Allison appeared in court the following day and was remanded in police custody.

The boy gave a statement to the court but Mr Allison denied the charges, an investigating officer said.

"The boy alleged that Mr Allison was abusing him regularly and took him to Nepal and Sri Lanka," Mohammad Kefaetullah told the BBC.

It is not immediately clear how the boy came into contact with Mr Allison.

The British High Commission in Dhaka said "consular officials are in touch with the Bangladeshi authorities over the detention of a British national" but refused to comment further.

According to Mr Allison's passport he has been visiting Bangladesh since 1981.

If convicted in Bangladesh, he faces a maximum sentence of 10 years imprisonment.
