Alex Salmond: Megrahi death 'closes a chapter'

20 May 2012 Last updated at 19:17 BST

Abdelbaset al-Megrahi, the only person convicted over the 1988 Lockerbie bombing which killed 270 people, has died at his home in the Libyan capital Tripoli.

He was released from prison in Scotland in 2009 on compassionate grounds, suffering from cancer, but lived a lot longer than experts had predicted.

Speaking to the BBC, Scottish First Minister Alex Salmond said that Megrahi's death "closes a chapter" for those who lost loved ones in the bombing.

He also defended the decision to free the Libyan intelligence officer, saying that the move was made in compliance with Scottish law.
