Wales

The Met Office issued a red alert for parts of South Wales, where snow has caused major disruption. More than 1,000 schools have closed and thousands of people have been left without power. Roads are treacherous and Cardiff Airport has been closed.

Somerset

In West Somerset, up to 7ins (18cm) of snow fell overnight. The council warned that it was having trouble keeping some roads open and the police said that drivers should not travel. Here Tim Shallcross from the Institute of Advanced Motorists advises drivers on how best to cope with the wintery conditions.

Norfolk

More than 300 schools were closed in Norfolk after snow hit the county overnight. Rail services were also affected by the weather, with trains between Norfolk and London subject to delays and cancellation. Norwich Airport reopened, but some flights were cancelled.

London

Warnings of travel disruption have been issued in the capital and Heathrow Airport cancelled more than 100 flights. Some train operators are running revised services and drivers have been advised to allow extra time for journeys. Contingency plans for Tube services have also been put in place ahead of possible disruption.

Midlands

More snow was expected to fall in the Midlands throughout Friday. Many schools in the region have been shut. Birmingham Airport was closed and icy roads were a problem in Leicestershire.

Northamptonshire

Temperatures dipped as low as -3C on Friday lunchtime and were expected to stay below freezing throughout the day. More than 100 schools closed as snow fell across the county.

Hampshire

More than 600 schools shut in Hampshire and the Isle of Wight and Southampton Airport was closed. Police said all main roads have at least one lane open but conditions are treacherous. The video shows a bus in Winchester sliding on a snow covered road (no commentary on video).
