A British national has died on the Spanish island of Lanzarote, the UK's Foreign Office has said.

Reports suggest the Briton was brought out of the sea unconscious by fellow bathers at Famara Beach, but emergency personnel were unable to save him.

A Foreign Office spokesman said: "We can confirm the death of a British national in Lanzarote on April 20."

The spokesman said the Foreign Office was providing consular assistance to the family "at this difficult time".

Lanzarote, the easternmost of the Canary Islands, is one of the most popular destinations in Europe for British tourists.

There has been no official confirmation of the identity of the dead person.
