2 January 2014 Last updated at 09:15 GMT

The New Year is often the time when we take stock of our lives. On Thursday London Zoo, will conduct a stock take on a much larger scale.

Zookeepers will count every single animal for the zoo's annual census. With more than 850 different species and thousands of individual mammals, reptiles and insects - it is a huge task.

Graham Satchell reports.
