UK arrests over Syria 'terror activity'

Two men from Birmingham have been arrested on suspicion of terrorism offences relating to activities in Syria, police have said.

The 21-year-olds were detained at Heathrow Airport at around 15:30 GMT after arriving in the UK on a flight from Istanbul.

West Midlands Police said the men are believed to have travelled to Syria in May last year.

They are being questioned at a police station in the West Midlands area.

The men are both from the Handsworth area of Birmingham.

Det Chf Supt Kenny Bell, head of the West Midlands Counter Terrorism Unit, said: "We took action this afternoon in order to ensure we can properly understand what activities these men have been engaged in whilst in Syria, not because they posed any imminent threat to the public."
